Spot the problem for sisters. Is it really obvious, or am I over thinking things?

Nicknames Tilly and Milly?

Idoitforthelove · 10/11/2015 19:13

Yep. Bugger. The only names I love.
Matilda is existing DD and isn't ever called Tilly ( sometimes Tildy, but mostly just Matilda)
I wouldn't shorten Amelia to Milly either. Maybe Amy or Mimi if anything.
It's too much of a risk though, isn't it?

I don't think it rules out using those names together though. Nicknames usually originate from family using them, and if your Matilda is never called Tilly, then it's unlikely that people will call her it. Same with the name Amelia. I knew an Amelia nn Millie, but she introduced herself to people by that name rather than anyone just deciding to call her it.

I went to school with a girl called Amelia and no one ever shortened her name to Milly! My niece is also called Amelia and it had never even crossed my mind to call her Milly! I don't think people would use that abbreviation if you didn't :) I think its a beautiful name! Only thing to consider is that it is extremely popular at the moment. I think it's either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd most popular in the UK. If you don't mind that, I think go for it Smile

I have met a few Amelia's and none of them where nn Milly. As you never us Tilly as a nn it is unlikely to be a problem so don't let that put you off.

lottiegarbanzo · 10/11/2015 23:10

I think Emilia lends itself better to Milly, as the spelling is closer. I don't think of it as a nn for Amelia really.

You have Tilda and Matty as options so Tilly is only likely if you use it I think.

We like Matilda for bump and my great gran said 'lovely name, can I call her Milly'

Jw35 · 16/11/2015 15:20

I think it's fine! Highly unlikely they will be Tilly and Milly if you and family don't! Lovely names!

You never know..they might LOVE being Tilly and Milly anyway!
