Pauline

Hi all, looking for some honest opinions. Currently 24 wks with DD, and I am hoping to name her Pauline, after my mum. I am really close to DM and recently she has really been a pillar of support in a very difficult time for me and my sister, and just as my dsis honoured my dad by naming her DS after him (although DN does go by an abbreviated more modern form of DDad's name most if the time) I would love to honour my DM by naming my DD Pauline after her granny.

DH says that he likes the idea of DD being named after her granny, and he does like the name but he is concerned that Pauline is a bit of a 'granny' name, and that she might get teased at school. DH thinks that we should we should have Pauline as a middle name and our second choice of name, Elizabeth first, but I honestly think Pauline Elizabeth flows and sounds better than Elizabeth Pauline.

I know it is quite old fashioned, (admittedly DM is in her early sixties) and I haven't heard of anyone younger than my DM called Pauline - and I know that there was a threat a few days a go about names that will never make a come back and I remember seeing Pauline on that thread a few times (my heart sank a little) but the more I think about it, I just feel so drawn to the name and I just feel it is so right, to honour my mum in this way as she has been incredible to me, and she spends so much giving to us, I just wanted to give something back to her.

So, do you think Pauline is too old fashioned for 2016? Shall I go with my heart, and take the risk that she may be teased (which I wouldn't want) it shall I just play safe and keep it as a middle name?

Sorry but I would definitely give her it as a middle name not a first name. It sounds terribly dated and isn't that nice in the first place! My Nan who I was really closr to died a few years before my daughter was born, I would have loved nothing more than to name my daughter after her, unfortunatly her name was Beryl, I wouldn't even give thag as a middle name! I love the idea of using family names but only if you really like the name itself without the family connection. If I was you I would call her Elizabeth.

TheAlchemist101 · 13/09/2017 12:24

I've always liked the name Paulette, could this be a possible choice? it would be nice for your dd to have her own special name which also has a connection to your DM

Pibplob · 13/09/2017 12:24

Don't do it! It's old fashioned and not a very nice name. I would hate to be called that and im nearly 40! Why not just polly as a nod to your mum? Or Pauline as a middle name.

ArcheryAnnie · 13/09/2017 12:30

Very old-fashioned, but all the better for it. (And she will be the only one in the class.)

Go for it, OP!

PrincessaCarrisi · 13/09/2017 12:32

I think it's a lovely name! Go for it OP

lanbro · 13/09/2017 12:35

My mum is Pauline and is also pretty fantabulous! What about Paulina, honouring the name but sounds a bit more modern....

demirose87 · 13/09/2017 12:46

No it's too old fashioned and not a pretty, old fashioned name. It sounds quite bland.

Sophronia · 13/09/2017 15:31

Go for it! Pauline is nice.

FfionFlorist · 13/09/2017 15:43

It is harsh and ugly and I'm not keen on the female versions of very popular boys names. They feel a little contrived and made up. If you like Polly call her Polly and Polly is a nick name for Dorothy which I quite like.

raviolidreaming · 13/09/2017 15:52

This thread is nearly two years old, so I'm guessing the OP has already made her mind up!

ArcheryAnnie · 13/09/2017 16:04

Oh, well-spotted, ravioli!

Come back, LookingforRainbows and tell us how Small Child Pauline (or not) is doing!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 13/09/2017 17:05

Paula is nice, maybe your DH, might accept it, it's still the baby's own name, but in honour of your DM.
Paulina is sweet.
I know a Paulette too.

I have a very close friend who named her child Douglas after a family member I remember at first thinking it was old fashioned and was unsure of the name. I love it now - little Doug couldn't suit him more - Go for Pauline!

Paulinepaulinepauline · 11/04/2025 19:49

I'm reading this all these years later and wondering how Pauline is?
I grew up as Pauline and embraced it...I was the only Pauline..tall, thin, long dark hair..did modelling!! Went to uni etc did jobs Pauline Pauline Pauline, that's all everyone knew me by..I made "Pauline"

10Pontipines · 12/04/2025 19:52

My 80+ year old Nana is Pauline but she gets called Polly as a nickname. My 1 year old daughter has a friend called Roberta so I don’t see why you can’t use Pauline.

GiddyCrab · 12/04/2025 21:12

Very grannyish. I would have it as a middle name.

MitzyLeFrouf · 10/11/2015 11:25

My best friend is a Pauline. She's a very cool doctor in her 30's. So I think it's lovely and much nicer than all those fussy Florence and Edith type names.

And I bet you anything that in 20 years time it will be shooting back up the popularity charts. Isabel was considered hopelessly out of date twenty or so years ago. Look how that turned out!

It's already been 10 years and it definitely isn't.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 13/04/2025 18:54

I don’t like Pauline but Polly or Lena are nice.

Bestfadeplans · 13/04/2025 21:57

Just reminds me of Pauline fowler, so I could never like it. But if you like it go for it.
