DILYS, Delyth

Hello,
Can anyone help me with the pronunciation of these names?
I think one means 'honest' and the other means 'pretty thing'.
We have Welsh heritage but no welsh speakers.
I'm not really looking for an 'unusual' name, but, depending on how these sound, think they could be pretty but not too 'out there'.
Help/ opinions appreciated. Thanks

Dilys makes me think of Dilys Price from Fireman Sam but I rather like it.

reuset · 30/10/2015 01:57

As Mrs said. Though Delyth is rather lispy sounding

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/10/2015 02:09

I really like Dilys. Have never heard of Delyth.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/10/2015 02:10

Reading it and never having heard it spoken, I would assume that Delyth is pronounced De-LITH or d'LITH, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 30/10/2015 13:21

You'd be wrong then *Hearts" Wink/

Delyth is a perfectly normal, fairly common name in Wales.

Dilys more of an old lady's name (IMO).

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/10/2015 13:46

Wasn't Roland Rat's girlfriend called Dilys?

chrome100 · 30/10/2015 15:15

Dilys is quite an old lady name in my head

chrome100 · 30/10/2015 15:15

ooh cross posts

Pancakeflipper · 30/10/2015 15:23

Dilys is a wonder name. I was just thinking this morning what an utterly lovely that name is.

Crazypetlady · 30/10/2015 16:06

Dell-ith
It's a lovely name
Dill-is not as keen.

cornishglos · 30/10/2015 17:05

Thank you all.

I wasn't sure how they'd sound to Welsh speakers. I like them, but Dilys sounds too close to Phyllis, and Delyth is a bit lispy. I'm also prone to nn, so would prefer Della (Delyth) to Dilly (Dilys).
I wish the sound 'Del-is' were a real name!

So I think frontrunners are: Anna, Helen (Hen/ Nelly), Delyth.

I've said it before on here, and I'll say it again. You have no control over what nickname a child ends up with once they leave your house.

mathanxiety · 31/10/2015 02:40

I was going to post in similar vein MrsLeigh.

I can think of another noun that Dilys sounds a bit too close to other than Phyllis, and I would avoid it therefore.

How about Della?
