Inspire me with some Welsh girls names

Bit advance as we are only TTC but I'm having a thinking evening Wink

DP's mum is Welsh so I quite like the idea of a Welsh girls names. DD has a very traditional English name (the long one that begins with A) so we need something that goes with that. Otherwise the current leaders for names are Margaret (Maggie) and Joanna.

I love Cerys but DP isn't keen. The only slight issue is that I don't do well with S's and F's so nothing too S-y works still upset at the loss of Saul as a boys name because of that

Any good ideas?

Ah, I was going to suggest Seren but now I see you have an S issue.

LumelaMme · 25/10/2015 22:21

Manon and Eluned would both go with an 'A' surname and are very lacking in Ss and Fs.

LumelaMme · 25/10/2015 22:22

Oh, and Rhian/Rhiannon.

ktmummy1 · 25/10/2015 22:23

Gwenllian

Hiddlesnake · 25/10/2015 22:26

Bronwen (Bron-when) Fair breast
Aderyn (Ah-de-rin) Bird
Eirlys (Eyer-liss) Snowdrop
Heulwen (Hoil-when) Sunshine
Enfys (En-viss) Rainbow

FreezerBird · 25/10/2015 22:27

Also I once knew an Enid, pronounced Enn-id rather than Een-id, but if you're not in Wales you'd ben constantly explaining the pronunciation.

Thurlow · 25/10/2015 22:30

I like Angharad but as I'm an 'A' too I think it might be overkill!

I'd forgotten Rhiannon, that is a lovely name. Even if it makes me think of Fleetwood Mac...

Elin is lovely. One of my grandmother's was Ellen, so that would be a nice combination.

My DDs have Welsh names.

We needed manageable ones for outside Wales though. On our lists were:

Bethan
Rhiannon
Gwenan
Bronwyn/Bronwen
Carys
Cerys
Elin
Anwen
Ffion
Manon
Nia
Lowry
Eluned
Haf (with V sound at end, not F) - means summer

I loved but DH dismissed as "too Welsh" (as in would spend their whole lives spelling their name for people. I speak Welsh, so don't see the problem! Dd2 ended up as Elin (the easiet one IMO!), and we get many many different attempts at spelling - Elen, Ellen, Alin, Ellin etc etc)

myfanwy (muh-FAN-wee)
Dwynwen (DWIN-wen)
Arianwen (Ari-AN-wen)
Ceinwen (CANE-wen)
Sioned (SHON-ed)

DeepBlueLake · 25/10/2015 23:16

Sian? It's on my shortlist if we have a girl.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 25/10/2015 23:29

Angharad ?

I'm slightly biased on that name though ;)

MrsMichelRouxJr · 26/10/2015 08:17

Cariad

Think it means love in Welsh?

Savagebeauty · 26/10/2015 08:19

Delyth....means pretty thing

Thurlow · 26/10/2015 11:38

Catrin is nice - is it Cat-rin or Cat-reen?

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm now thinking maybe Welsh names are a bit too Welsh - we don't live in Wales, don't have a Welsh surname, in fact there's nothing to obviously connect us with Wales (unless you meet DP's mum). I'm not sure how well any of these names, bar Elin and Catrin, would sound alongside a sister with a very traditional English girls name, and a very traditional English surname.

Sigh... back to the drawing board maybe!
