What are some 'normal' or 'common' names that have awful meanings?

I heard Cameron to mean crooked nose
Amelia without limbs (on here the other day)
Rex/Rory are red-faced..

We chose our DDs names because of their meaning.

We have an asian atheist friend married to white atheist Brit man who named their son Christopher, which I found odd.

Rex is Latin for 'king'

Rory/Ruaraidh is Scottish Gaelic for 'red king'

Cameron does mean 'crooked nose' in Scottish Gaelic; it's a surname and many of those originated as sort of nicknames (just as in many other places). FWIW Campbell = 'crooked mouth'.

Gosh - that sounded very blunt. I didn't mean to be rude. It's just that so many baby-naming websites and even some books are works of fantasy!

I love Cecil / Cecilia (and variations) but it means 'blind' which put me off.

Claudia means "lame".

I had a feeling red-faced may not be totally accurate. The red was in there!

It seems 'c' names are dodgy!

I believe Ptolemy means 'snivelling entitled twat'.

DD name has a very positive and special meaning, DS not so much but we loved the name so much.

Hmmm I'm not so sure people link Christopher to Christ that much anymore, especially given it being shortened to Chris and so the name is Chris-topher rather than Christ-opher iyswim. It did take me a few moments to work out why it was considered odd.

But wouldn't you look up the meaning of a name before using it, for that very reason? I would never use a name unless I knew (and liked) its meaning.

I posted earlier strongly advising someone not to name their daughter Melina. Foul smelling black digested bloody poop. Mmmmm....

Amelia is a birth defect meaning without limbs, but the actual name Amelia is a variant of the name Amalia which means 'work'.
