DD2 on the way ??. If I am honest, I felt pushed into choosing my DD's name by DH (it was v important to him as it was his mother's name) and although I like it, it would not have been my choice. I do and always have loved Cosette. I know it's from Les Mis and that it isn't even a real name but I just love it. My DD's name had a french vibe so it would go. But is it totally ridiculous??? Xx

Makes me think of a sanitary towel........

squoosh · 23/10/2015 10:19

I know a non French Cosette so it doesn't sound too strange to me. Aside from the odd tune I've managed to avoid Les Mis thus far (hurrah!) so have no idea what the character is like.

BoboChic · 23/10/2015 10:24

Nobody, but nobody, in France names their child Cosette. It has never been popular but reached its (relative) heyday in the mid-20th century.

For an equivalent think Doreen or Mavis.

squoosh · 23/10/2015 10:27

In Ireland Colette is a real Doreen or Mavis name.

tinybellows · 23/10/2015 10:28

Cosima?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/10/2015 10:34

Cosima is a Doreen or Mavis name in Italy.

Maybe you should call her Doreen OP? Or Mavis? Grin

Bloomsberry · 23/10/2015 10:38

Yes, Squoosh. In my neck of the woods pronounced 'C'LET!'

squoosh · 23/10/2015 11:40

Oh yes, always C'LET. Often to be found in the company of M'JELLA.

DeepBlueLake · 23/10/2015 11:40

I thought it said cassette before I re read it..

SoftBlocks · 23/10/2015 11:43

Sorry, reminds me of toilet paper. Colette is lovely as is Cosima.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 23/10/2015 11:50

Cosette is actually called Euphrasie. Cosette is a corruption of chosette, which means little thing.

reuset · 23/10/2015 13:04

NOt a name much used in France, for all its 'French vibe'. Horrible. And I detest Les Mis the musical, so some bias creeping in there I think.

reuset · 23/10/2015 13:07

Colette is very dated in France and in the UK.

BoboChic · 23/10/2015 13:17

Colette is a Doreen/Mavis equivalent in France.

Zhabr · 23/10/2015 13:24

Euphrasie. The girl was called Euphrasie. There is an interesting passage in the book about this name and also about names shortenings.

Castledolorous · 23/10/2015 14:58

I think it sounds lovely Smile

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 23/10/2015 15:52

Sounds like a blanket.

PestoSwimissimos · 23/10/2015 16:03

I think it sounds like a contraceptive pill, sorry

villainousbroodmare · 23/10/2015 16:14

I think it sounds like a lovely little fleece-lined pod that you could put your baby in if you lived in snowy places.

Grin at C'LET, M'JELLA and don't forget their friend GEMMA!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 23/10/2015 17:17

I love Cosette, but then I love Les Miserables Grin.

I love Eponine more, but I wouldn't count on everyone you meet being able to pronounce it.

Cosette nn Ettie is absolutely fine. As a PP suggested, Colette is also nice.

LettuceLaughton · 23/10/2015 17:33

Odette or Colette would win for me over Cosette. I'm afraad I agree about it sounding like some sort of product.

But, of you absolutly love it, just go for it!

SilverOldie2 · 23/10/2015 17:58

Sounds like closet - ie loo.

Snossidge · 23/10/2015 18:05

I know a lovely little Odette.

Cloudydaysaregreat · 23/10/2015 19:07

I knew you'd (mostly) all hate it! Maybe it's just as well DH named DD. Her name is uncommon in RL but v popular on here. I still love it but I'd worry I'd lumbered her with a name she and others may hate. It's not actually even a name in France (half of my family are french) but I love the sound.

Back to the drawing board.... Might be able to get DH to agree Josette or Juliet (I love ette /et endings!!) Are either of those any better? Josette is diminutive for Josephine in France xx

I like Josette too Smile
