Critique my boy names

ABCFamily · 20/10/2015 06:24

As per my other thread, I've just found out that I'm pregnant, and am having fun thinking of names.

Although I'm a Brit, I've been living abroad for a while, but intend to move back to the UK in the next year or so. How would these boy names be perceived back home?

Which of these names do you like/dislike, & why?

Andrew
Benjamin
David
Edmund
Elliot
Eugene
Hamish (is it weird to use Hamish if you're not at all Scottish?)
Jasper
Martin
Peter
Robin
Rowan
Simon
William

Andrew - fine
Benjamin - fine
David - also fine
Edmund - nice
Elliot - not so keen, but it's not terrible either
Eugene - not really, though Gene is ok
Hamish (is it weird to use Hamish if you're not at all Scottish?) - not at all, use it
Jasper - trendy feel, dislike
Martin - dated feel
Peter - fine
Robin - fine, though prefer for Robert
Rowan - nice
Simon - ok
William - fine

Tepid responses from me there Grin means all quite inoffensive and fine, even those I wasn't so keen on are ok really

I dislike Eugene and Irving (don't like the sound). Not particularly keen on Martin, Robin or Rowan (although like this for a girl). Like all the others, but find William and Benjamin very popular around here. Andrew, Elliott and Jasper are my favourites.

I know several Hamish's none of whose parents are Scottish. And I LOVE Griffin, Jago and Tobias Smile

PontyGirl - I think Rupert is great, especially the nickname Roo, but my husband isn't a fan. I'm also worried that it might come across as a bit pretentious or try-hard (have a similar concern about Jasper). Has it become a bit more mainstream in the UK these days, or is it still considered quite posh?

ABC I know a couple - one young and one v old - know affectionately as Rupes Grin I don't see it as pretentious, more ahead of the curve iyswim. Lots of Harrys etc, it's only a matter of time until people rediscover Rupert for the fabulous name it is Grin
