Buddy?!?

Poppins27 · 18/10/2015 09:26

Right, I'm ready for it....give me everything you've got?!

19 weeks pregnant and completely, totally and utterly lost on a name for impending child, especially if it's of the blue variety.

Dd is a Lottie, what would her brother be please?!

I like Buddy, but can't decide if I like it enough if it's going to continually offend?! What's your thoughts please?!

It's s nickname isn't it? Give him a proper name and have that as a nickname.

minime8 · 18/10/2015 09:35

There is a little boy in my dd's school called Buddy. It suits him and he is lovely. If you like it, use it!

WishIWasWonderwoman · 18/10/2015 09:38

It's a lovely nickname.

But please DO NOT put it on the birth certificate.

Lottie you can just about get away with as a full name but Buddy is very nicknamey.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 18/10/2015 09:39

Don't do it. It might be cute for a little boy but it's going to start sounding stupid as soon as he reaches secondary school and get increasingly worse.

RabbitSaysWoof · 18/10/2015 09:46

I have one. It's not popular but I love it, everyone in my family now loves it (they were very honest when he was born and volunteer that they love it now, I've never asked anyone what they think and if they have changed their mind)
Lottie was very high up our girl shortlist.
You have to remember rl isn't mn, in real life your child will be at school with handfuls of Sonny's/ Teddy's/ Albie's/ Tilly's/ Dolly's..........
My Dad was the most against it, said it's American.
It's actually English it means Brother.

Poppins27 · 18/10/2015 09:47

Well that wasn't as bad as I feared!! Thanks so far. I completely get what you mean re it being a nn but what would you shorten it from?! Really struggling with any other boys names.

OP posts:
RabbitSaysWoof · 18/10/2015 09:51

I don't think the name has to be similar at all if you just want to give someone a nn.
My friends little boy had a friend called Jed, They always used to talk about him and I thought it was a brilliant name, I was a bit gutted to find out Jed is actually a Robert.

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/10/2015 09:51

Ultimately if it's the name you love them you should use it but do consider that your son will also be a grown up with a job at some point and he might be grateful for the option of a 'full' name. Just like all the Teddies and Albies and Alfies and Freddies etc...I would, if my name was Tilly, Millie or Dotty or something of that ilk. (Just my opinion though)
It's just worth considering that's all.

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/10/2015 09:53

And I've never heard of Jed as a nickname for Robert! That connection is just obscure! Although it's probably no different to me calling my DS 'pickle' or 'poppet'.

RabbitSaysWoof · 18/10/2015 09:54

Posted to soon, ment to say that if you lengthen a name you love to have a more 'acceptabe' version you will probably end up with a name your not fussed on so you can use the good one.
I also wanted Emmy for a girl and was suggested Emily at the time, but I would feel disappointed when people addressed her Emily because I've never loved that name.

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/10/2015 09:57

emmeline would have been cute for Emmy!

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 18/10/2015 09:59

Maybe it's partly a generational thing then, Rabbit. To me Sonny, Teddy, Albie, Tilly, Dolly and Buddy sound like a row of dolls in a toy shop tbh.

Poppins27 · 18/10/2015 10:00

Thanks Rabbit, I never knew it meant Brother...like it even more now!!

We are constantly asked if Lottie is short for Charlotte, it's not and I was very clear on that from the beginning so not sure why I'm stressing about Buddy so much?!

It did worry me re when 'Buddy' was older, would the name fit an adult....but then my grandparents couldn't imagine my name when I was grown up either ...and that's Nichola/Nikki so I guess times do change naturally anyway!!

MitziKinsky · 18/10/2015 10:00

I love it.

I know someone who wanted to call their DS Buddy and everyone told them they couldn't. So they didn't. Then realised they'd made a mistake, and they now have a DS known to all as Buddy, but it's not on the birth certificate.

So what ever you do, put it on the birth certificate! Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/10/2015 10:01

It's ok for a small boy.

It really doesn't sound ok on a man.

HawkEyeTheNoo · 18/10/2015 10:03

It's entirely up to you and sounds like you really like it. When I hear it, it makes me think of Elf the Christmas film tho

Poppins27 · 18/10/2015 10:05

Hahaha I know what you mean hawkeye but I'm ok with that, the film makes me smile!

I was more worried about the association with it being known as a dogs name if I'm honest!! (And trying to persuade DP that Buster is unusable for that very reason didn't want to be a hypocrite!!)

BreeVDKamp · 18/10/2015 10:06

Agree, by the time DS is a grown up, Buddy/Sonny/Bear/Dolly etc will be as normal to that generation as Sarah/Caroline/Lindsay are now. I know a Woody, Sonny, Sully, Libby just Libby etc already.

Footle · 18/10/2015 10:08

Rabbit, my grandma's real name was Emmy and she was born in the late 1890s.

RabbitSaysWoof · 18/10/2015 10:09

I LOVE Woody Bree and Buster Blush
But my dog is called Harry, very mn acceptable child and grown man name.

Poppins27 · 18/10/2015 10:18

Hahaha rabbit and bree we apparently have very similar tastes which is helping convince me I'm not inflicting a lifetime of shame on my poor Son!!

Whilst were at it...what girls names would you throw at me?! So far I like Elsie (but don't imagine I would have a girly enough girl for it) and Betsy. Adore Hattie...but way too similar to Lottie. Love Emmy too...but unfortunately it's ruled out by our surname.

RabbitSaysWoof · 18/10/2015 10:29

Indy was my other nn type girls name, then I think the other names were more full names, Maeve, Leni, Rae or Raya and Orlaith.

jeee · 18/10/2015 10:29

This shows my age, but my first thought was Chesney Hawkes singing 'I am the one and only'.

badtime · 18/10/2015 10:48

jeee, me too!

I think it's horrible. I generally dislike nickname-type names and cutesie names, and 'Buddy' ticks all the wrong boxes for me. But it's not me naming your child, and if little Buddy dislikes it as much as I do, there is always deed poll.

badtime · 18/10/2015 10:49

Mitzi, surely your anecdote means the opposite, that you can put whatever you like on the birth certificate and still call your child Buddy?
