Thoughts on our shortlists?

We have really struggled getting a shortlist together, and because we didn't find out the sex, we've had to find double the names!

Here are the lists, with my concerns against each:

Girls:
Merryn. I LOVE this, but our son is Morgan and the opinion on another thread is that they are too similar. I can't let it go yet though!
Erin. Suggested as an alternative to Merryn, but I just think Erin Brocovich and think it's a bit American
Rosa. Not so keen on Rose or Rosie, but we have no Spanish heritage so is this a bit pretentious?

Boys:
Theo. I don't like Theodore much, so they'd actually be named Theo. Sounds a bit posh to me
Toby. Again, sounds a bit public schoolboy.
But I have basically veto'd all other boys names for being too popular, or too American sounding.

We have a really common surname, so I want something that isn't REALLY popular, but I don't want silly obscure names either.

It's so hard to pick!

I love Toby. It's a great name.

I would register as Theodore (I know two Theo's and neither are posh. Quite the opposite in fact...)

Merryn is too similar to Morgan imo. What about Keryn /Peryn? Only Erins I've ever come across are Irish. What about Erica?

You don't need to be Spanish to use Rosa.

I like all of your names but favourites are Theo and Erin.

cosmicglittergirl · 16/10/2015 16:42

Yes to Toby.
I really like Merryn and don't really see the issue long term as they will be separate people. I have a friend who recently gave her second daughter a name that started with the same letter as the first. Also, the name rhymed with her name. (Think Ella and Bella).

Like Merryn or Rosa for a girl. Not too fussed on Erin.
Like Toby for a boy but although I also like Theo. They're everywhere.

Salene · 16/10/2015 22:42

I only like Erin and Toby , the others I think of being weird

MummaGiles · 16/10/2015 22:47

I knew a family that had DCs Howard, Harriet and Hugh. Two M names don't sound so bad now do they...

Scarletforya · 16/10/2015 22:47

Merryn is a bit nothing-y. Erin is ok.

Theo is nice but popular. Toby is drippy.

evenoldergregg · 16/10/2015 22:54

Meryl?

NoMilkNoSugar · 16/10/2015 23:08

I've always loved Theo, it was on my shortlist, but I like Toby as well.

Have you thought of Merrin, with an 'I' not a 'y'? You get the similar sound but it doesn't look so similar when written.

Sugarandsalt · 16/10/2015 23:14

I don't know any Erin from Ireland. When I see Erin I think of packets of soup. I like Rosa. If you like Merryn, what about Muireann? Or Mary? Classic and underused these days. I prefer Theo to Toby personally.
