Is Elias too similar to Eli

My sister named her son Eli last year. We're due in a couple of weeks. We really like Elias. Is it too similar? Would it offend her?

Would it offends her, well you know the answer to that question, before we do. But I me I would find it weird if my sister named her child something similar to my child rather than offensive.
Yes they are too similar.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/10/2015 21:40

Yes. It would be v v weird imho.

Creatureofthenight · 13/10/2015 21:41

Yes too similar

Lucked · 13/10/2015 21:41

Yes

JollyGolightly · 13/10/2015 21:41

It's basically the same name. I know an Elias nn Eli.

scatterthenuns · 13/10/2015 21:45

Too similar, sorry.

celtictoast · 13/10/2015 21:51

Elias and Eli were different people in the Bible. Apparently Elias is of Greek and Hebrew origin and means "Jehovah is God". Eli is of Hebrew origin and means "high". So they are separate names. However, as Eli can also be a nickname for Elias, I'd say they are too similar to use.

Thatrabbittrickedme · 13/10/2015 21:59

Yes too similar, it would be weird.

Why not ask your Dsis what other names were on her shortlist if you have similar tastes - a friend asked me this as she liked the name we chose for DD a lot

Imnotbeverley · 13/10/2015 22:01

Definitely, as you probably already know

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/10/2015 22:05

Too similar.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 14/10/2015 20:12

It depends how you are pronouncing Elias. If you are saying Eli-us then yes far too similar, as it is just the same name with a bit added! If you are saying Ellie-Us then I think it is different enough (although very similar in spelling!) I know two children called Elias and they both pronounce it differently.

NuffSaidSam · 14/10/2015 20:27

They're very similar.

Whether it would be ok to use or not will depend on how close you are to your sister. If you only see each other once a year or something then just go with the name you like. If they're going to be seeing a lot of each other I'd find something else.

marmitemofo · 15/10/2015 16:32

too similar. But DP's brother and SIL have just named their DD a very similar name to our DD so it can be done! You could try asking your sister if she minds - we weren't asked nor was the similarity every referred to when they were discussing names and I have to say me and DP were a bit Hmm about the name being so similar but didn't say anything as wasn't our place.

KoalaDownUnder · 17/10/2015 00:33

So much too similar that I'm surprised you're asking.

reuset · 17/10/2015 01:58

They do indeed sound too similar. Do you see much of them? If not then it might be ok, possibly...though I wouldn't

Dogsmom · 17/10/2015 23:11

Is it pronounced Elly-ass or E-lie-ass?

Also how much will the kids be together? My two hardly ever see their cousins so a similar name wouldn't be a problem but if we were closer and they would likely be friends then it could be a bit odd.
