Margot/Margaux and middle names.

Opinions on Margot or Margaux spellings please? I want a relatively normal but pretty middle name to go with the unusual first name in case she chooses to go by that instead. I like the spelling Margot but feel Margaux is much further away from the word maggot.

Margot. By miles. I think Margaux looks a bit try hard without French background. Also, people will automatically spell it Margot and annoy her!

I think Margot is quite an easy name to match with actually:

  • Margot Elizabeth
  • Margot Catherine
  • Margot Philippa
-Margot Josephine -Margot Louise

Just thinking of some of the classic girls names in DD1's school year. I think generally a constonant at the start will flow best, though some vowels work too.

Definitely Margot.

Margot Alice
Margot Rebecca
Margot Emily
Margot Hannah
Margot Isabelle
Margot Olivia
Margot Penelope
Margot Sophia
Margot Jessica
Margot Lucy

Margot by a mile

The 'proper' name is Margot, short for Marguerite but for a long time a stand-alone name in its own right.

Margaux is the name of a chateau and the red wine produced in the nearby vineyards.

It was allegedly first used as a name by Margaux Hemingway, who changed her name from birthname Margot Louise to Margaux, after the wine drunk by her parents on the night they said she was conceived (TMI, surely!)

Although poor, beautiful Margaux Hemingway had a very tragic and too-short life, the name change is still pretty naff, IMO.

Margot is a lovely name, please don't mess with it!

Margot is the best spelling, esp. in the UK.

Yika · 12/10/2015 19:50

Margaux is an accepted spelling in French speaking countries. I think it's pretty but would go for Margot in the UK.

I would never have made the connection with maggot - the pronuniciation is so far off they don't seem to resemble each other at all!

Being of advancing years though I'll never be able to hear the name Margot without thinking of Margot Leadbetter in the Good Life!

Seriouslyffs · 12/10/2015 20:07

I was going to tell the same anecdote as flora- such sad connotations.

TheCraicDealer · 12/10/2015 20:08

Margot, defo! It's the name of my car and actually I'm now considering putting it on my eventual progeny names list. Obvs won't tell her about the car if it comes off.

cosmicglittergirl · 12/10/2015 20:22

Margot Rose
Margot Iris
Margot Pearl
Margot Olive/Olivia
Margot Camille

crumblybiscuits · 12/10/2015 20:43

We also have a Poppy Bridget if that helps too and our surname is a one syllable surname that begins with 'P'. I've told my partner we will have to use Margot as general consensus seems to be very anti Margaux. I think I agree. Also should have mentioned in OP we will be using two middle names as is family tradition! Sorry for drip feed, baby brain.

So far my favourites have been Margot Louise and Margot Phillipa.

Margot is becoming extremely popular - it's been mentioned on the baby names thread at least three times in the last week.

So don't pick a 'boring' middle name on the basis the first name is unusual!!

crumblybiscuits · 12/10/2015 20:53

I am choosing it with the expectation of it rapidly gaining popularity! Not boring as such, I think she could always shorten Margot to Maggie or Margie anyway if she hated it. I just have no idea where to start with middle names!

Being on lots of threads isn't lots of babies though! There were only just over 100 in England and Wales last year. Even if it tripled in 2015 it would still be rare.

BYOSnowman · 12/10/2015 20:57

Maybe it's just where I live but I have heard it a lot!

I was using the threads as an example, not the only evidence!

In terms of middle names I think it goes with pretty much anything except other names that start 'ma' or end 'o'

cashewnutty · 12/10/2015 20:58

My DD (age17) has a friend called Margot. They call her Marge. Beware!

MargoReadbetter · 12/10/2015 21:00

Small correction for Yika. It's Margo (no final T) in The Good Life. I've researched it. I'd just associate it with that series. And those who are too young to have seen it, check it out :)

Yika · 12/10/2015 21:01

Ah, thanks! It was a classic anyway. Penelope Keith was brilliant!

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 12/10/2015 21:05

Snowman -assuming you are England or Wales you must have good chunk of the 100 then. Grin

BYOSnowman · 12/10/2015 21:06

A lot of them are babies!!

Lunastarfish · 12/10/2015 21:08

Ditto Margot spelling

Margot Beatrice
Margot Louise
Margot Annette

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/10/2015 23:20

Margot Bluebell
Margot Georgia
Margot Ellena
Margot Nicole
Margot Lynette
Margot Imelda
Margot Alicia
Margot Samantha.

Re Margot Hemingway being named after the wine her parents drank the night she was convinced. My dd is lucky I didn't do such a thing. Her name would have been lambrini. Grin
