We need to choose a name for our son due in one week. His sister is Elizabeth. Could you rate these names in order of preference and add your opinions where possible, please?

So, Elizabeth and ...

  • Edward
  • William
  • Daniel
  • Frederick
  • George
  • Thomas
  • Leo
  • James
  • Mathew

Thanks!!!

OK, with the usual caveat that this is just my opinion etc etc

  1. James (I am biased here) - think it's a timeless classic
  2. Edward. I wanted to call DS2 this and shorten it to Teddy
  3. George
  4. Frederick
  5. Thomas
  6. William, although not keen on the full name I do like Will
  7. Leo - easy to spell
8 Mathew - it looks wrong to me with one t although I know it is an accepted spelling
LauraChant · 10/10/2015 16:14

Oh I forgot Daniel, I would probably put that last, although I don't hate it - I think you have similar taste to me.

With the exception of Leo it reads like a list of royal names.

But with an Elizabeth I guess that's a vibe you like Grin

So for me Leo is the best as it pulls away from the royal theme, although all the names are nice enough on their own.

Frederick's quite nice too.

Floralnomad · 10/10/2015 16:18

I would put Mathew first but would use the double T or it looks a bit odd to me ,then James , I don't like Leo and the rest I have no feelings about at all .

FattyNinjaOwl · 10/10/2015 16:18

Elizabeth is a beautiful name (and would have been the name I used had DS2 been DD2)
I like James the best

actually, I think Laura has my list that I would do

anothernumberone · 10/10/2015 16:22

Leo
James and the rest are equal 3rd they are all good strong names.

Whichonetochoose · 10/10/2015 16:35

Thank you, ladies! One of my main concerns was that it sounds too "royal", is it best to avoid it, so it doesn't sound too pompous? By the way, was going to spell Matthew with double T, ignore the spelling error.

My husband's favourite from the list is Edward, I don't mind it, but my concerns are:
Elizabeth and Edward - both start with same initial "E", sound too royal together, the name is a little dull. Am I overthinking it and being unreasonable?

Please keep your ratings coming! It bothers me so much that I can give birth any time now and we haven't decided yet!

I love Daniel, Matthew, William, James

No strong feelings either way about Thomas, Leo or Edward.

Don't like Frederick and George.

Do you mind shortened versions?

Elizabeth and Edward are fine together.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/10/2015 16:51

Do you like Joseph?

CPtart · 10/10/2015 17:05

Edward, William and James I like in their entirety. No Teddys or Wills or Jamies. Two of them are actually my boys middle names and the third would have been too if I'd had another boy. Good strong classic timeless middle names.
Apart from George and Leo the others will probably get shortened at school if that bothers you. Thomas particularly, is massively overused and I strongly dislike Frederick (and Freddie is awful).

Sophronia · 10/10/2015 18:45

I like James, Thomas or Frederick best with Elizabeth.

CakeRattleandRoll · 11/10/2015 05:16

I have an Edward (Teddy) so that would be my first pick. I don't think having the same first initial as his sister would matter.

I like most of your others, would probably order them:
George
Matthew
Thomas
All the others equal.

And no, I don't think having two children with 'royal names' is too much. Maybe if you had three...
