Margot or Marlowe as baby sister for Archer?

Which baby girl name to you prefer; the more traditional Margot - or the more alternative Marlowe? We're still looking for the right baby girl name, to go with our son's name which is Archer (nn Archie sometimes).

I know you have not asked for my opinion but I would tend towards slender vowels in a girl's name and broad vowels for a boy.
Margot sounds like a hefty young one.

RiverTam · 10/10/2015 16:24

What?? So girls should have slender names now? Heard it all now Hmm.

RalphSteadmansEye · 10/10/2015 16:41

Margot is about a thousand times better than Marlowe.

SoDiana · 10/10/2015 17:35

Slender vowels.

RiverTam · 10/10/2015 18:08

I still don't understand? You said 'Margot sounds like a hefty young one'. What does that even mean?

ConesOfDunshire · 10/10/2015 19:24

SoDiana means that Margot sounds like a fat girl's name.

JasperDamerel · 10/10/2015 20:17

Like that well-known fatty, Margot Fonteyn?

SoDiana · 10/10/2015 22:45

No. Sodiana thinks that margot doesn't sound feminine.

Snossidge · 10/10/2015 22:53

Marlowe matches Archer more as a surname type name. I think it's quite trendy sounding too - have there been some celeb baby Marlowes recently?

MargoReadbetter · 10/10/2015 23:48

SoDiana - the dog in the film was called Marley.

Mclaren37 · 11/10/2015 02:14

Thanks everyone! A lot of you seem to be kind of of the same opinion as DH and I, that Margot is the nicer name but that Marlowe 'goes better' with Archer. I keep asking people the same question and hoping for a different answer! But no, this really is the case! Hmm. We've always loved Margot so I think we'll probably stick with it, even if it doesn't make the best pair. Our DS does get called Archie a fair bit while he is a toddler, so I guess that works ok with Margot.
(On the celebrity name front, yes it was Sienna Miller who named her little girl Marlowe - personally, of the surnamey-names, I think Marlowe sounds more feminine but I suppose they can all swing either way.)

Sodiana because you think girls shouldn't be 'hefty'.

Only1scoop · 11/10/2015 08:34

Margot by a mile Smile

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 11/10/2015 08:36

Marlowe is a fab name... And I know one (who is a girl!)

I think it's the best by miles.

TheRattleBag · 11/10/2015 09:06

Why does it have to "go" with Archer? More important that it goes with her surname surely?

If the names suit the children, then what's wrong with having Zaphod Beeblebrox and his sister Elizabeth Victoria?

Marcipex · 11/10/2015 12:40

I like both but they seem very different names.
Margot, classic but can be nn Maggot. Works better in other languages.

Marlowe, sounds feminine to me, much quirkier name.

Only1scoop · 11/10/2015 13:35

My db's friend 'Mal' actually has the Christian name Marlow. I only found out recently had thought for the last 20 years it was just a nik name relating to his surname but ....no.
