Our ds2 is due in Jan and we're finding it so much harder to come up with a name than first time round. Anyone else having this problem?

We like strong sounding names. Our first son is Arthur and we immediately loved it but this time we like so many names but aren't certain of any.
I've always quite liked Hector but think it might be a bit much with Arthur? I always thought that after Arthur we'd choose something simpler for a second son as surprisingly there have were a few raised eyebrows when we first told people ds1's name.

We like James too (although I feel it's not quite right) and Hugo (though my sisters thought this was ridiculously posh so that put a bit of a dampener on it). Quite like Max and Miles too, and Henry. Also like Oscar but feel it's quite of the moment. Just not really sure about any of them - especially to go with Arthur.
In an ideal world we'd have George but my best mate has already nabbed that one! Any thoughts anyone? Any ideas on the names I've mentioned would be much appreciated! Thanks

If anyone's still there, how about Louis with Arthur?
Dh not overly keen but I reckon I could persuade him! Or are the names together too king-ish? Thanks!

I know of two brothers-Arthur and Jarvis.
It's so difficult to choose a name, you're probably just better off waiting until baby arrives. I had a shortlist of 2 but when my DS arrived I didn't feel like either of them were right so he was name-less for a couple of days

Elmo303 · 09/10/2015 09:26

Thanks Earth, not keen on Jarvis but I think you're right about waiting!

Nearly chose Max for our DS, still love it.

I think Giles and Miles are rarer than Hugo these days, living in the SW I hear quite a few boys being called Hugo so it no longer strikes me as posh.

If your friends were startled by Arthur I suppose they'd freak out over
Angus
Ellis
Rafe
Ramsey

Talking of WW2 era type names, was surprised when someone I know picked Stanley but that's grown on me, duckfilledfattypuss beat me to it.

Elmo303 · 09/10/2015 12:15

Donkeys good to know about Hugo not being seen as posh down south, thanks for that. I really like Angus but I know hubby won't like it unfortunately, plus I'm not too keen on same starting letter sibling names, don't know why! Would you mind me asking what you went for with ds? I do love Max still.

PM you Smile

Arthur and Hector together is a bit trendy. I'd go for Victor instead of Hector
I like Angus but that would be two As. What about Fergus

Barbie1 · 09/10/2015 19:24

I have a Hugo..a few raised eyebrows when his name was first mentioned but we don't care because we love it Grin

It's actually quite plain sounding compared to the other names we are surrounded by (we live abroad)

So I might be a bit bias but I say go with Hugo!

aoife24 · 09/10/2015 20:45

Hector, definitely Hector, great name and all the ones I know are lovely.

Elmo303 · 11/10/2015 13:25

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think in the absence of a clear favourite we're going to wait and see what the bubs looks like! But at least we've narrowed it down to just a couple with your help.

I have a Hugh and he likes his name. My imaginary next boy would be called Edmund.

Good luck with everything.

CelestiaLuna · 11/10/2015 14:46

William
Peter?

scatterthenuns · 11/10/2015 14:49

Hector is dreadful. 'Over here Heck, pass me the ball!'

Heck as a shortening is truly vile.

I love Miles.

RiverTam · 11/10/2015 20:56

The Hector I know is Hec for short. Not vile at all, no different from Dave or Mike really.

helentheheron · 11/10/2015 21:25

Louis is good.

Also maybe Peter or Jonathan.

Minimaus · 12/10/2015 13:33

But Hec sounds like Heck! As in 'What the heck'! or 'Heck'.... That's got to be worse than Dave or Mike.

RiverTam · 12/10/2015 13:52

I haven't heard anyone use that phrase in many a year, maybe that's just where I live. But it's possible for words to have more than one meaning/usage and it's equally possible for us to engage our brains and not confuse the two. Well, I can.

Elmo303 · 12/10/2015 14:46

I really like Hec! I think it's fun and cute. Sometimes I think the best nicknames are those that aren't necessarily traditional, pre-established abbreviations but just affectionate shortenings that family members have arrived at naturally. I reckon Hec would fall into this category.

My advice would be not to share your suggestions with family. Everybody will have an opinion but it's your choice ??
