Soireann- any Scottish Gaelic speakers out there?

I'm just wondering exactly how this name should be pronounced. Also whether it's a name/word at all!

DH and I are Irish and already have a DD with a lovely Irish name. Thinking of other Irish/Gaelic names for the next DC.

I love the name Doireann but am not keen on its meaning ("sullen" according to most sources).

I came across Soireann on another thread, meaning brightness or serene, calm weather, which sounds lovely. I don't recognise it as Irish and think it's Scottish. I would pronounce it "Sirren". Any native speakers who could steer me right on this?

What about Muireann? Beautiful Irish name.
I'm Irish too though so not sure on Soireann pronunciation.

A bit like Seerun I think.

Yes Muireann is fab but similarly I always wonder if it's "mwuren" or "murren".

I love angsting over minor details! Grin

How about Roisin? That's a good name Smile.

Have you got any boy names picked out? Struan is a good boy's name Smile.

I love Irish names. I've been considering Fiadh, Siofra, Liadan, Etain, Roise, Ailbhe, Riona, Taillte, Saoirse, Aifric if any of those appeal - I'm having a girl though so not thought about boys names!

The Muireann I know pronounces it like Mwirin.

SmugairleRoin · 04/10/2015 22:40

Those names need fadas btw, I just cant on mobile.

Aoibheann is also lovely!

Some of those names need fadas, I just can't do it on mobile...

Aoibheann is lovely too.

Oops, thought that hadn't posted last time - dodgy phone decided to shut down on full battery!

It is Irish, though not used as a name up to fairly recently. Doireann was adopted as a name a few decades ago but I think Soireann is catching up.

It is pronounced Sirren, and for extra marks for authenticity you make the R into a faintly Z sound.

Muireann should ideally be Mwirrin, not Murren.

Roisin, Roise and a lot of smugairle's choices are on the shortlist already.

Boy's name likely to be Fionn, Rian or Cathal.

Thanks for the pronunciation math. I used to work in a Gaeltacht area so I know what you mean about the z sound.

Thanks for the input all!

Thanks Sgoinneal. I'll have to get out my Irish dictionary when I get home and see if it's there.

Soirbheas is a lovely word. Such a beautiful language.
