Concerns about Margot

Margot is a currently our top choice girls name. We have both always loved it, and like that it is familiar yet uncommon.
We have a couple of concerns though... Is it likely to get shortened to Marg? And could the spelling be mispronounced? (Eg. Mar-got) and if so, should we consider spelling it Margo instead? Would love your thoughts.

Château Margaux is a well known wine producer. I wouldn't use that spelling for a girl's name.

Minimaus · 05/10/2015 19:27

Or just spell it Margo - that way the pronunciation will be clear. It will also make it much easier for your dd when she starts to spell her name!

BestIsWest · 05/10/2015 19:30

Margaux Hemingway was named for the wine wasn't she?

I love Margot but think I prefer it spelled Margo.

pootlebug · 05/10/2015 19:33

I prefer the Margot spelling. I think it's lovely too.

Up to a point, you can't stop nicknames with any name. My son has a 1-syllable first name which is often elongated into a 2-syllable name by his siblings. My daughter calls her friend Ruby 'Roo' sometimes, but she's not generally known as that. I am known by different people by 3 different names, none of which are my given name. But I think because Margot isn't that common, it doesn't have a natural shortening iyswim? There are always people on here whinging that their son Thomas is being called Tom - because it is a really common shortening. But where there isn't a common shortened version, I think it is less taken as given.

pootlebug · 05/10/2015 19:34

Also FWIW I assume Margo is a shortening of Margaret whereas Margot is a name in its own right.

BYOSnowman · 05/10/2015 19:36

Hemingwaychanged the spelling of her name

The aux spelling seems more common in France atm

It's becoming very popular down south!

BestIsWest · 05/10/2015 19:37

Ah right.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 06/10/2015 21:42

I have a Margot and have never had any pronunciation problems. A few people have tried to shorten it to Margs or Margie but generally she is known as Margot.

Apparently it's rising in popularity in the UK but I think it has a long way to go before it becomes the next Isla/Emily as a pp mentioned. It was ranked 415th last year.

5madthings · 06/10/2015 21:46

I love margot and I want it on the name list for madthing6 due April but dh says no.

rubybloom2 · 07/10/2015 10:38

Thanks for your insight everyone. We're 99% sure we're going for it, with Margot spelling. Now for the middle name decision!

Yay!

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2015 11:18

With a T and shortened to Meg.

knittingbat · 07/10/2015 11:23

'Concerns about Margot' sounds like a completely amazing thirties novel about a boarding school girl gone off the rails. I love it, although we have discounted it due to apparent impending Isla/Emily popularity and the fact that somewhere we are likely to live has an accent that manages to make it sound like maggot. Grrr. It is beautiful though.

JessieThom · 07/10/2015 11:27

I really like it, and definitely think most people would know how to pronounce the conventional spelling.

I know one Margot who gets called Margs but I think her family initiated that and I'm not sure it would come about naturally otherwise as Margot is plenty short and relaxed enough as it is. The only other Margot I've come across (except in the Good Life) is in the book Gone Girl, where Nick's sister Margot gets called 'Go' for short... never heard that before though!

It's a lovely name. :)

rubybloom2 · 07/10/2015 11:29

Ha ha knittingbat, you're right. I'm a writer so perhaps I should pen something!

Why do folks think the name is set to become popular?

Mclaren37 · 09/10/2015 21:19

I am due in 3 weeks and she will be Margot Isabelle! (mn is family name). So yes we love it. 100% think it should be spelt the 'correct' way, with a t. Margo is a bit trendy for me and Margeaux is just 'faux French' - totally unnecessary since Margot is a French name already.
We also love Penelope for a future sister, but realized there would be a total 'Good Life' theme going on there, re Penelope Keith??, so maybe not!)
Enjoy your Margot!

CaminanteNoHayCamino · 09/10/2015 21:32

The association your dd's generation will have is likely to be Margot/Margo from Despicable Me. She's pretty cool though so it's ok Grin.

Chuggsbugs · 23/10/2015 23:23

Definitely hugely on the rise. Nice name though.

Blahia · 23/10/2015 23:37

LOVE Margot and don't think it would get mispronounced. It's getting more popular where I live though (S London) in case you worry about popularity....

Also, how about Maud/ Maude? another great French name!
