Then the little guys mate turned up shouting "hi Denver"

Different, but I don't think I would would use it.

Harlow is popular, dagenham less so.

mrsschu · 24/09/2015 19:15

Oh well I stand corrected on the English place names front!! Camden and Brixton, well there you go. And every bit as ridiculous "unusual" as Denver and Brooklyn Grin. Probably Walthamstow will catch on next, or maybe Putney...

PotatoGun · 24/09/2015 19:30

I suspect that if you know the place, placename names just sound ridiculous. There are lots of Shannons, and Irish-Americans in particular find it 'Celtic' and winsome, but to me it's primarily a rather dreary industrial free zone with a godforsaken airport in the middle of it.

ShowOfHands · 24/09/2015 19:35

Grin @ FartemisOwl Maybe for their second born.

2legit2knit · 24/09/2015 19:38

Are you sure it wasn't Demba? I thought a boy at DS's school was Denver until I saw it written down.

Bohemond · 24/09/2015 19:50

I had cats called Brixton and Stockwell but not appropriate for a child....

LumelaMme · 24/09/2015 20:11

Nobody who had ever visited Brandon would name a child after it. I suppose if you live in Wales you'r the other side of the country.

Denver was in Norfolk first. Just sayin'.

ShowOfHands · 24/09/2015 20:31

You might call your child Brandon as a celebration of the fact that you got out of Brandon with all of your limbs when at one time you thought it wasn't possible and you'd end your days mired in the heinous wasteland, desperate for sunlight and air that isn't fetid with the stench of decay.

mrsschu · 24/09/2015 20:40

Bohemond Brixton and Stockwell are excellent names for pets! And they could be joined by Clapham and Kennington if you ever decide to get more...

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/09/2015 20:43

Denver reminds me of the cartoon Denver the Last Dinosaur

RedToothBrush · 24/09/2015 21:27

Its a nice name.

RJnomaaaaaargh · 24/09/2015 21:31

Armani I was just singing that theme tune to myself as I scrolled down the page

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/09/2015 21:36

Grin glad I'm not the only one.

pieceofpurplesky · 24/09/2015 21:43

I have taught a Britain, a Devon, a London, a Brooklyn, a Dallas, a Dakota and a Chester ....

LondonSnow13 · 24/09/2015 21:55

I love London.....

As well as Braxton

Casey for a boy

LondonSnow13 · 24/09/2015 21:55

I like Sidney for a girl. I know one

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 24/09/2015 21:59

Not heard Denver as a name before. On holiday this summer, there were brothers called Hudson & Oakley. There do seem to be more American style surnames-as-first-names about these days.

I have no particular feeling about them really. I don't hate them but don't like them either. And certainly haven't come across one I'd want to use.

NationMcKinley · 24/09/2015 22:00

I might name my next one Croydon then - bang on trend.

That said, I do know a Dallas (boy) and a Boston (boy).

throwingpebbles · 24/09/2015 22:03

I quite like it!

Also I always chuckle at this threads because my toddler daughter has a very conventional name but all close friends and family call her by a totally quirky nickname that she acquired as a small baby. Also I frequently call my little boy the name of whatever TV character he is obsessed with at the time! Currently kwazii from the octonauts Grin

SlipperyJack · 24/09/2015 22:11

Thetford! Grin

HearTheThunderRoar · 25/09/2015 07:43

In DD's (16) year at school there is an Indiana and a Devon (both girls).

Remember Georgia is a place name as well.

Nonnainglese · 25/09/2015 07:56

I'm still dismayed at hearing three children called Chardonnay, Merlot (boy) and Foster being bawled at in the supermarket yesterday....... Be thankful there wasn't a Pernod I guess.

KoalaDownUnder · 26/09/2015 11:19

I know someone who has a Denver and a Dallas. I think they're awful names.

Other gems:

Cairo
Capri and Rio (sisters)

tiddlyipom · 26/09/2015 11:43

Georgia was named after King George the second though...
I know a Hudson,a Lincoln, a Memphis, a Daytona, an Arizona and a Montana.

manicinsomniac · 26/09/2015 17:59

I like it.

I like place names for names though.

I know a family (not all sisters, some are cousins) called Atlanta, Sydney, Dakota and Savannah - think they're all lovely on their own (I have a Savannah myself) but maybe a bit much together!

I've also taught India (f), Austin (m), Orlando (m), Paris (m), Indianna (f) Chelsea (f) and Milan (m)
