Will I regret not using the name I have loved for 20 years?

Currently 26 weeks pregnant with DC2. We don't know the sex but I suspect girl.I have loved the name Alice since I was 18 but there seem to be so many around at the moment! Numerous younger siblings from DC1s preschool seem to have the name. DH and I also love Margot so am veering towards that but will I always regret not using Alice?!

Alice or Alys as the second name?

FadedRed · 23/09/2015 12:50

Assuming your surname does not start with a D, of course.Grin

nicknamenoname · 23/09/2015 13:25

Both lovely names; I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. How about wait until the baby is born, try both names out for a couple of days at a time and see which one "sticks"?

squoosh · 23/09/2015 13:26

There's no point not using the name you really love because it's isn't as niche or cool as another name.

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2015 13:30

My name is Alice, and I have a 3 yo DD. I have not come across any baby Alices through nursery, baby groups etc. If you love it then use it!! You could check the ONS baby name stats website too, they are broken down by region.

VB111 · 23/09/2015 13:40

Yes, you will regret it I think! I do love Margot too for what it is worth! I didn't use my one true boy name love as I felt it was to popular and my husband preferred another, I regretted it everytime I saw 'my name' written down or heard spoken! Luckily I got another chance to use it though!

SirVixofVixHall · 23/09/2015 13:48

I don't know any little Alices here (Wales). I know one who has it as a middle name. Alice is more classic than Margot, although they are both lovely names.

StandoutMop · 23/09/2015 13:55

I have 3 dd, all under 10 so know a lot of young girls. I know 2 Alice's, one is 7 the other 4. So it doesn't seem crazily popular here (SW).

My dd1 has my favourite, loved for years name. It was top 20 when I gave it to her, top 10 pretty much ever since. In her year (90) she shares it with one other, so its not like she is one of 5 or anything.

Use the name you like most (but Margot Alice is fab).

RiverTam · 23/09/2015 14:05

I don't know of any Alices, so I say go for it!

Qwertybynature · 23/09/2015 14:07

If you love the name so much why does it even matter? Other children with that name won't be your Alice.

I had one boy name that I loved before I had my ds (we didn't know what we were having). I've met a few since but I still love it.

MyFavouriteClintonisGeorge · 23/09/2015 14:08

Margot is suddenly all the rage, so it won't necessarily solve your problem.

The name we used for DD is suddenly becoming popular. It's fine though, we love it. Does it really matter?

I have a name absolutely classic for my generation, as my mother does for hers. It never bothered me that quite a few other girls at school and university shared it, and I don't suppose DD will care if her name is suddenly popular either.

Go with the name you like the most, honestly.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 23/09/2015 14:12

There are no baby Alice's here either (Midlands). Everyone is Isla or Sienna.

I would say use the name otherwise you may always have that regret. Unless you would be happy with Margot Alice?

I used the name I'd chosen aged about 12 for DS1 as it had always been 'my boy's name' and I still loved it just as much when he was born. A couple of years later it was the most popular boys' name in the country & hasn't dropped out of the top 10 since! DS1 is 18 now and I still have no regrets about using my name, and still love it as much. It's just a bit of a shame that millions of others loved it too Grin.

CoodleMoodle · 23/09/2015 14:13

Alice is my DD's middle name. Sometimes I regret using it as I could've saved it for a future baby, but it's SO right for DD. And if I don't have more DC then it wouldn't be used. Sometimes I call DD her full name so that I can say the Alice part!

Margot Alice is lovely. But I'm biased! Alice Margot is pretty as well.

Boosiehs · 23/09/2015 14:15

There were 3 Florences in our hotel last week, and 2 georges. Out of about 10 children total!

Tigerblue · 23/09/2015 14:18

I've always loved the name, Emily. So we have a 12 year old named Emily and it doesn't bother us there are a few others she knows. We did have a few other possible choices, but I'm glad we went for the one I really like and DH had no problems with!

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 23/09/2015 14:22

Honestly, I don't understand why popularity of a name is a problem. If you love the name, use it! So what if there are others with the same name? My eldest son has a popular name but it is a name I adore and always have so I didn't care if he was the only one or if every other child in his class had the same name!

Alice is a lovely name. :)

CaminanteNoHayCamino · 23/09/2015 14:28

I know one almost five-year-old Alice. And one adult in work. And one mum called it. That is the sum total of all the Alice's I've ever known.

Radiatorvalves · 23/09/2015 14:39

None in my DSs classes 8&11. My niece who is 11 is an Alice.

FunkyPeacock · 23/09/2015 14:48

My DD (12) is Alice, I was the same in that it had been my favourite girl's name since I was about 16
My DH wasn't keen at first, but he agreed after 9 months of persuasion Grin - I'm sure I would have regretted it if I'd not gone for it!
There are a few other Alices around but it certainly isn't madly popular and I don't personally know any babies or toddlers called Alice

Canyouforgiveher · 23/09/2015 15:13

You should use the name. First it is a great name and second you really will regret it - especially as Margot is all set to become the name that marks you as having been born in 2014-2017 (or the 1940s). So you will not use the name you love because it might be popular and will end up with your second choice name that is trendy/popular.

Anyway, even if Alice is slightly more popular that it was, who cares? It is a classic name that is always used. Not a name where someone says "how lovely, very unusual" but more "how lovely, my great grandmother was called Alice"

There are about 900 pupils in my dd's school age 5-18. There is one Alice (also one Mary and one Anne). In one class alone there are 3 Chloes.

poocatcherchampion · 23/09/2015 15:14

Lovely name. I'm putting it on my list

CruCru · 23/09/2015 15:50

Use it, it isn't so popular that it should be a problem.

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2015 17:40

how lovely, very unusual" but more "how lovely, my great grandmother was called Alice

This is exactly my experience of more than 40 years of being an Alice. It's a name everyone knows, and how to spell, but I am very unlikely to run into another one of any age. When I do we get a bit giddy about it.

I was also once let off a speeding offence because the copper's grandma had the same name as me.

Idoitforthelove · 23/09/2015 17:56

My daughter has the most popular name in the country, but I've loved it for 20 years too. We thought about calling her something else and very nearly chose another, similar, name. We didn't and now know three children with the 'other' name and none with the same name as our little one.
Go with what you love. Unless you're planning to name your child Rasberry or Titania, it's likely that you'll bump into children with the same name somewhere along the line...

Issie339 · 23/09/2015 18:00

I don't know any little ones called Alice, we're in the South East. I know a few in their 70s and a few in their early 30s. It's a beautiful name, I'd say definitely use it.
