Emil. No e on the end - Emil is the Polish/German/other bits of eastern Europe spelling.

Would you say

Eh-meel

or

Eh-mil

eh meel.
like Emil the Detective
emil is the male version, the E on the end isn't western european, it's feminine version

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/09/2015 11:59

Eh-mil. Although more like Ee-mil. DS has a friend called Emil, although tbh not sure how he spells it.

BertrandRussell · 23/09/2015 12:01

Eh-mil.

French boy's name.

horsewalksintoabar · 23/09/2015 12:06

German is my second language. My father was from the East.
It is German.
E-meel (but not drawn out if you know what I mean).
Emil and the Detective. Solid!
I love this name and have always had it on my list alongside Otto.

horsewalksintoabar · 23/09/2015 12:08

But it is one of those names like Theodor (Theodore) that spans across cultures, which makes it very classy.

horsewalksintoabar · 23/09/2015 12:10

Sorry 'EH' I should have written. That's what I meant anyway.
'Eh-meel' but said short and sweet, not drawn out.
Ok. I will go away now. Grin

wigglesrock · 23/09/2015 12:16

I'd also Eh meel but quickly.

Thurlow · 23/09/2015 12:23

Eh-mil, or at least that is how our Croatian friend wants it pronounced.

emwithme · 23/09/2015 12:34

Eh (as in Emma) Meel (rhymes with peel)

BertPuttocks · 23/09/2015 12:38

The only one I know (Latvian) pronounces his name as eh-mill.

ShadowLine · 23/09/2015 12:38

Eh-Mil

weebarra · 23/09/2015 12:43

I know a Norwegian one - Eh-mil

AugustRose · 23/09/2015 12:45

DS2 has Emile as a middle name and we say Eh-meel as it has the e on the end. However I would probably still say Eh-meel for Emil as I see it as a variant. But most people would probably say Eh-mil.

KoalaDownUnder · 23/09/2015 12:47

I would say Eh-mil

yeOldeTrout · 23/09/2015 13:07

EH-mill. Not EH-meel.

Morporkia · 23/09/2015 13:14

Eh Mil...

DancingLady · 23/09/2015 14:13

Thanks all. I'd say Eh-mil, unless it's the French spelling, Emile, in which case I'd say Eh-meel.

JaneAustin Emile isn't a female name, unless it's Emily or (shudder) Emille, Emilie, or some other made-up variant.

horsewalks It's also Polish - quite old, maybe like Wilfred or something in the UK. And yes, I like that it spans cultures, as I want a name that will make sense to my Polish relatives and also to English family.

Dancing, Emilie is not a 'made up variant' of Emily, it is the standard spelling in many countries, although the pronunciation varies between 'similar to Emily' and 'similar to Emilia'.

badtime · 23/09/2015 22:08

Oh, and I would say 'eh-meel'.

mrsschu · 24/09/2015 07:47

So I love this name. I briefly considered it for DS. I would say it Eh-meel. DH is German and says something more like A-meel (with the "a" sounding like a as in ape rather than a as in apple if that makes sense). What ultimately put me off it is the number of possible pronounciations. I didn't like the fact that different people would pronounce it differently (and I wanted a name that sounded more or less exactly the same in German and English). But I still love it!

Rosaaa · 24/09/2015 18:41

I'd pronounce it short like Eh-mill

DancingLady · 25/09/2015 10:44

mrsschu this is my only reservation about using it for soon-to-be-born DS! That he'll constantly be correcting the pronunciation. But my name, and my DD's name, are non-English and people always pronounce them wrong so I guess he can get used to it... Smile
