I really like the name Obie - and am aware of Starwars...does it really matter re mickey taking? Our surname is an 'O' and I love the alliteration aspect....

"I really like the name Obie - and am aware of Starwars...does it really matter re mickey taking?"

Yes. It does.

AuntieStella · 22/09/2015 11:37

Yes, I think this one probably would matter as it doesn't really exist as a free-standing name. Nor is it a typical contraction (Oberon goes to Aubrey).

AbeSaidYes · 22/09/2015 11:38

What about Ori or Orrie?

IAmAPaleontologist · 22/09/2015 11:39

I knew a baby Obadiah once who was called Obie for short. I knew them from a very churchy church run playgroup. Dh came once and upon hearing that the baby was called "Obie" said "Oh is that after Starwars?" The poor mother was horrified and I was mortified Grin.

Obie is a bit nickname like for my taste but who cares? People name their children all manner of things these days, what matters is what you think of it, not what anyone else thinks of it.

MyBoysAreFab · 22/09/2015 11:40

I really like it, but think the Star Wars thing would be constant, so yes it probably does matter.

dingit · 22/09/2015 11:41

No

ButtonMoon88 · 22/09/2015 12:06

I look after a little boy with the nn obie, I do get odd looks which annoys me despite him not being my child. People ridicule the unusual so be prepared

Floralnomad · 22/09/2015 12:10

Sounds like a dogs name ,sorry . Ok as a nn

juneau · 22/09/2015 12:14

Obi Wan Kenobi. And with the new Star Wars film coming out in Dec - nope I wouldn't do it.

squoosh · 22/09/2015 12:28

The Star Wars thing would be beyond tiresome, especially if he grew up not to be a fan of the franchise.

Posey01 · 22/09/2015 12:42

Hmm yes I do agree AuntieStella the fact it's not a free standing name the majority of people will associate it with Star Wars...

Shame :( Well, back to the 'O' drawing board - thanks for your opinions and may the force be with you :)

Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars

And then a million times more... there really is no separating the two... not even for your PFB/DC.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 22/09/2015 12:56

Toby if you like the sound?

Even without the Star Wars thing tbh, Obie sounds like a pet or a CBeebies character - not a person's name.

Meanings and history of the name Orry: | Edit
Orry is the name of a king who lived on the Isle Of Man. It is also used in the Manx language for the sentence "Raad Mooar Ree Gorry" which means "The Milky Way" or "The Great Way of King Orry".

SmugairleRoin · 22/09/2015 15:53

Reminds me of the dog in Garfield (was he Odie though?). Or an obi belt for a kimono.

CremeBrulee · 22/09/2015 16:19

Just clicked on the thread to say that Obie screams 'daft dog from Garfield' to me but I see someone beat me to it Grin

SmugairleRoin · 22/09/2015 17:21

Great minds think alike, eh Creme? Grin

I liked the dog in Garfield, I'm just not sure that's an association you want for your child!

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 22/09/2015 18:26

Garfield! THAT'S what I was thinking of!
