We like these girls names...

DD2 will be arriving soon and we like two names but doubt anyone else will. In fact our first choice has been universally disliked to date. I am interested to hear MN opinions...so here goes:

Artemisia
Omaia

Both work with our surname and DD1 likes them!

Thanks in advance

OP - there is another thread who's daughter is Artemisia - look for it. Then you can pm her.

SmugairleRoin · 20/09/2015 20:08

Artemisia (and I've seen someone else on here has an Artemisia so if you're reading this, try not to take it personally, I am sure your girl is lovely) strikes me as the kind of name an upwardly mobile, Hyacinth Bucket kind of name. The type of name where the mum has only exposed her to Gregorian rap fusion chants and fed her on organic, hand knitted olives grown by unicorns in the Himalayas.

I do not like it. Some names to me are pretentious, and this is definitely so. Even Artemis would be better.

SmugairleRoin · 20/09/2015 20:09

Whoops part of my sentence there seems to have eaten itself. But I'm sure you can understand it anyway.

ediepop · 20/09/2015 21:12

I only feed Artemisia on organic hand knitted olives grown by unicorns from outer space thank you very much! Tsk. The Himalayan ones simply aren't up to the job imho.

We named our DD after Artemisia Gentileschi, a favourite feminist/artist heroine of mine. Pretentious? I guess so. Wanky? Definitely. The fact there are several other famous Artemisias from the ancient world helped as well. People will like/not like it. They can get stuffed Tbh. We wanted a strong female name, with history. I think we got one. As for the life time of spelling it, so what? My name is also long and hard to spell. It doesn't bother me.

As for nicknames...she actually has a totally unrelated nickname, and has recently begun insisting on her full name, but in the past we've used Tizzy and Misia. Never Arty. I hate Arty.

Wearyheadedlady · 20/09/2015 21:16

ediethehorse. I asked if it was a joke. I didn't say anything about having pretentions to grandeur. That's your take on it.

SunshineAndShadows · 21/09/2015 00:05

If you're referring to ediepop's response, I think it was directed at the post directly above it

StevieJo · 21/09/2015 00:24

I actually quite like both, Artemisia slightly more

Wearyheadedlady · 21/09/2015 01:00

No I wasn't. I wrote ediethehorse, the OP and that is who I was answering.

eddiethehorse · 21/09/2015 04:16

I was replying to two posts, the one asking if the choices were a joke and the other sayingArtemisia is pretentious.
We are neither Hyacinth Bucket types, nor pretentious. We like the name, we don't live in the UK so it might not seem so strange/pretentious or whatever else where we are. It will definitely stand out from the endless Ava's, Isobel's, Eva's, Sophia's etc which are so commonplace everywhere you go. I agree with the lady from the other Artemisia post, it is strong and has great history.
You don't post on here unless you have thick skin I guess, thanks for your comments!

I wouldn't pronounce it R T Misia. More like Arr-tuh-MEE-zha. Or Arr-tuh-MEE-see-ah.

Are you sure you didn't find the name in '300: Rise of an Empire'?

Omaia sounds in my head more like an exclamation than a name.
'Oh MY (a), what the heck happened here!'

At first I didn't like Artemisia, but as I've read through the thread it's grown on me. I think it's pretty, OP :)

HeteronormativeHaybales · 21/09/2015 07:08

Artemis is great, strong classy name, strong inspiration. Artemisia sounds deliberately over-egged.

fleurdelacourt · 21/09/2015 11:56

Just no, sorry.

Artemisia - not really a name. Will constantly have to spell it out. Artemis is the name and is marginally easier?

Omaia - you said you were trying to escape from the hoards of Sophies and Isabelle's but surely this will put you squarely in the hoard of Mias, Maias and Mayas? The spelling will always cause her issues (Amaya/Emaia/Omya etc)

Does your other daughter have a very elaborate name too?

TheNewStatesman · 21/09/2015 12:19

I think they are both very fussy and difficult to spell..

eddiethehorse · 21/09/2015 12:23

Well it is actually a name...a quick Google will provide you with some history going back to the ancient Greeks.

My other daughter has a pretty name, its a classic name but not commonly used.

OP posts:
chootalkinboutWillis · 21/09/2015 12:33

Oh god they both sound like one of those 'overheard in Waitrose' names... Sorry.

fleurdelacourt · 21/09/2015 13:34

ok - it is a real name in ancient Turkey. I stand corrected. But all the other comments from everyone still stand.

This is like an AIBU when people ask AIBU and everyone replies YABU and the OP ignores all the feedback that they asked for.....

eddiethehorse · 21/09/2015 13:43

Where have I ignored the feedback? I have taken both the positive and negative comments onboard.

OP posts:
Wearyheadedlady · 21/09/2015 14:15

I have a fussy, girly unusual name which no one I have ever met has had or known. Believe me its an enormous pain in the arse to live with. Most people say it incorrectly, spell it incorrectly and there's a lot of fuss and bother.

eddiethehorse · 21/09/2015 14:51

Can you share what it is Weary? Based on my choices i might like it :)

OP posts:
AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 21/09/2015 14:57

Both names are way over the top! Why would you want to saddle your child with a lifetime of having to repeat her name when introducing herself, correcting others' pronunciation of it and constantly having to spell it out.

I don't understand the recent desire for unique (a.k.a made up) names.

eddiethehorse · 21/09/2015 15:09

Neither are made up, just unusual....some links:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemisia_Gentileschi

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemisia_I_of_Caria

Omaia is an Arabic name.

OP posts:
AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 21/09/2015 15:13

I realise they are not made up, OP. But considering very few people have wikipedia committed to memory, they certainly sound made up.
