All of our possible names have been used by friends - that old dilemma!! Really struggling until we decided on Hunter James - surname is short and ends 'ie'. Someone I work with said this was chavy unknowingly to them it's our only boys name!! All opinions welcome!

My DH is a Hunter - he is very rah, but he is 40.

Teachermummy27 · 20/09/2015 13:44

Was posh once.

Now either a gladiator or brand of wellies.

Suspect it may be a bit of a Jayden/Kayden name in a few years.

MamaLazarou · 20/09/2015 16:05

I don't use the 'c' word but it's a pretty trashy name, yes.

Also, Gladiators.

Also, it rhymes with 'Munter'.

Madbengalmum · 20/09/2015 16:07

I think its very chavvy, sorry
However, the chavviest i have heard is Phoenix!

BlameItOnTheBogey · 20/09/2015 16:10

I think people will judge your kid for having that name. They may be the kind of judgmental people you would rather avoid anyway, in which case no problem. But it will happen.

PacificDogwod · 20/09/2015 16:14

If you like it, use it.

I don't recognise 'chavy' when it hits me over the head tbh.
Fwiw, I quite like Hunter.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 20/09/2015 16:16

Regardless of chavvy, it's going to remind people of the twats who like killing animals for entertainment - that dentist who shot Cecil the lion for example. It's the first association I'd make anyway. Is that what you're after?

goldglittershitter · 20/09/2015 16:19

Yes, sorry. Nice name but does have that feel now.

Friendofsadgirl · 20/09/2015 16:22

I have a lovely posh friend called Hunter. He would be very upset to think his name was chavy. It's lovely.

chicaguapa · 20/09/2015 16:27

I know a Hunter and she's a girl.

CookieMonsterIsOnADiet · 20/09/2015 16:27

Awful name and very chavvy, James is nice though.

I just can't picture either a tiny cute baby or grown professional adult with that name.

I thought I had Baby Names hidden. I find it's the best way to avoid chavvy and "trash" as applied to people. I guess I need to re-check my settings.

It's not chavvy (horrible term anyway), but I wouldn't say Hunter, Harper, Mackenzie, Carter, Hudson etc scream "classy" either.

cdtaylornats · 20/09/2015 16:36

Worst named guy I ever met was called George, unfortunately that was his surname as well. You have to wonder what his parents were thinking calling him George George

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 20/09/2015 16:38

It sounds a bit too painfully cool and trendy to me, not chavvy, whatever that means anyway. I quite like it though. Smile

IguanaTail · 20/09/2015 16:39

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/09/2015 16:43

The current U.S. vice-president has a son called Hunter (well, Robert Hunter Biden but known as Hunter). Hunter was the maiden name of his mother Neilia.

I think it's quite common (and, actually, nice) to use family names in that way in the U.S. Quite poignant as his mother and baby sister were killed in s car crash just before Christmas when he and his brother were 2 and 3 so lovely to have that link.

We don't tend to use family names in that way here so much (ie Having them as middle names but actually using them as first names) so I think it can be a bit chavvy. But, that said, I've heard far worse names than Hunter

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 20/09/2015 16:54

When the working-class aspirationals cotton on to a trend, you know it's over, or should be. Surnames as first-names is hugely popular right now. I have a "Taylor" in my very working-class family, so I know what I'm talking about.

What's so wrong with proper names David, James or Peter anyway?

TheoriginalLEM · 20/09/2015 16:59

a hunter is someone who hunts and kills animals. why would you name your child after that? for me it conjures up images of white hoods and that is not good

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 20/09/2015 17:02

Bitter has hit the nail on the head.

Nataleejah · 20/09/2015 17:13

Haven't heard or met one. Not sure if its chavvy or not, just not very nice

OlafLovesAnna · 20/09/2015 17:50

One of our consultant surgeons is called Hunter, he's prob in his 50s and it works on him if that helps

HackerFucker22 · 20/09/2015 17:55

I actually don't mind it (would never use it myself though)

Another name of similar ilk is Archer - I adore this!
