Ruby - still super common?!

We've always loved Ruby but when dd1 was due it was extremely popular (so they say, I knew 1) which put us off. We also liked it with dd2.
Now expecting another girl and we still love it. It's dropped in the charts and I only know of 2 under 5.
Would she be just another Ruby?
Our other choice of name is Matilda ..

I'm 31 I have younger siblings as young as 22 none of us know a ruby. Does that help?

annandale · 18/09/2015 22:13

Ruby is lovely. I don't know any. If you pick a second preference name because it's less common, you will inevitably find there are 3 of them in the reception class. And who cares? They won't be in the reception class for long.

BeautifulStars93 · 18/09/2015 22:18

Yes we went with Eliza for dd2. We now know 3 locally since she was born.
So I imagine if we go Matilda well meet several.

There are a lot of Matilda's about, I know a lot! Ruby I only know one and don't hear it too often. I'd say if you have loved it for so long, you should use it or will regret it!

BeautifulStars93 · 18/09/2015 22:25

We've also loved Matilda with our other daughters too. That's why we're struggling so much

I have a Ruby, who was 6 yesterday. I think it was 2nd most popular name when she was born, however we have only ever met one other Ruby and that was this year on holiday. She is a only Ruby in her school. If you love it go for it.

Sophronia · 18/09/2015 23:07

I know quite a few Rubys, but no Matildas. I prefer Matilda.

squoosh · 19/09/2015 02:41

I think it's still ultra common and will date pretty quickly.

Ruby is the scullery maid, Matilda lives above stairs.

BeautifulStars93 · 19/09/2015 19:18

I always considered Ruby a more traditional name?

I know three Rubys (Rubies?), two in the same class.

I think it is very, very popular.

Trenzalor · 19/09/2015 19:22

I'm a teacher and know lots of both.

Dreya · 19/09/2015 22:22

I really like Ruby and don't know any. Matilda is nice as well. I know two. One is 8ish and the other is 4 known as Tilly.

Kaekae · 20/09/2015 00:10

I know more Matilda's than Ruby's. Both are lovely names.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2015 00:24

I know no children called Ruby or Matilda

Chottie · 20/09/2015 06:39

I know lots of Ruby's aged from 65 down to about 18 months, very popular in south London.

I know lots of Matilda's who are all called Tilly / Tillie / Tils / Milly / Millie as a nn.

Onedirectionarestillloved · 20/09/2015 08:03

I know equal amounts of both.
I would choose Ruby if you like that best.

Daphnedolittle · 20/09/2015 08:41

I think Ruby has been popular for years now whereas Matilda is experiencing a sudden peak in popularity.
I would go for Ruby, it's a beautiful name.

MaisieDotes · 20/09/2015 08:46

I thought of Ruby for DD, but it wouldn't have worked with my surname. This was 15 years ago.

I know one Ruby, she's in DD's year and she's 14 or 15.

I ended up giving DD another super-popular scullery maid name which I've never regretted for one second!

Choose the name you love.
