Charlotte or Caroline?

We are looking for a name for our DC4 (DD2) which is proving impossible! A lot of the names we like are a no-go as they don't go at all with the existing DC.

Our existing DC have long names (3 syllable) and the most 'popular' of the 3 is still outside the top 100, the other two down around 400.

At the moment the two favourite are Charlotte (Charlie) and Caroline (Carrie) - both go well with the other DC names, both work with our very short surname.

Charlotte is DH's fave, and on the surface mine too but I don't like that it is top 10 now and obviously the association with Princess Charlotte so probably going to get even more popular.

We both are quite drawn to Caroline but worried....I'm not really sure, that its a bit too 'not quite there yet' to even be just slightly ahead of the curve (DC1's name was picked about 4 years before its popularity started picking up, its still on the way up now).

So thoughts? which would you use?

Caroline. There's not many/if any little Carolines about now. I think Charlotte could become over used on account of the new Princess

SmugairleRoin · 17/09/2015 21:00

Caroline is much nicer imo, I'm not keen on Charlotte at all.

Wishful80smontage · 17/09/2015 21:01

I like both if pushed probably Charlotte slightly more.
Strong yet feminine though...
Catherine
Victoria
Georgia
Elizabeth
Harriet

Glad you like Georgina, but stick with Caroline :)

Prefer Caroline.

Charlotte is actually the number 1 girl's name in Australia (and was before the princess), so def too popular here!

poocatcherchampion · 18/09/2015 08:16

Googled it. Love it!!

VB111 · 18/09/2015 15:50

Soooo many Charlottes about! Caroline is lovely and sounds like it suits the criteria for your other children.

CruCru · 18/09/2015 16:22

Caroline, definitely.

YouBastardSockBalls · 18/09/2015 16:28

Caroline but shortened to Caro

RedToothBrush · 18/09/2015 17:01

Caroline. Definitely. It IS ahead of the curve IMO.

Coraline is on the up. Emmeline is too. And Adeline.

In fact, you might want to look at this trend graph for -line names. Its for the US but there is a similar pattern in the UK.

Note the peak around the 1920 point. That's what you want if you want to be ahead of the curve if you apply the 100 year cycle.

I think it will become more popular and soon.

Vernonon · 18/09/2015 18:01

I never considered Caroline for dd but when she was about two I suddenly thought what a beautiful name it is. There aren't many around but I bet it starts getting more popular soon.

TheDowagerCuntess · 18/09/2015 20:11

Charlotte is nice, but over-used at the moment. On that basis, I would go with Caroline.

I have a name that was a generation ahead of its time, and DS does, too. I admit, I'm glad I don't have a bog-standard name from my era.

Jenijena · 18/09/2015 20:13

Caroline is beautiful and, I think, quite timeless.

Lunastarfish · 19/09/2015 10:31

Caroline is one of my favourite names.

I have a pathological hatred of charlotte. I know many and they are all manipulative people - bit strange really

DramaAlpaca · 19/09/2015 14:30

Caroline, without a doubt. Love it.

Pandora978 · 19/09/2015 14:42

Charlotte isn't top 10! It's no.23 and if you look at the charts it's been slowly dropping for the past 20 years.

But if you don't like Lottie, I'd go with Caroline as there's no guarantee a Charlotte will want to go by Charlie, especially as Charlie is so popular as a boy's name now. Caroline is slightly 70s/80s dated but not in the same way as other names from that era I don't think.

Chottie · 19/09/2015 14:45

Another vote for Caroline :)

RalphSteadmansEye · 20/09/2015 08:39

Caroline nn Caro is very strong.

Or Carolyn?

RickOShay · 20/09/2015 08:47

Definitely Caroline. I like both Carrie and Caro as nicknames.

ShootTheMoon · 20/09/2015 09:04

I prefer Caroline - nn could end up bring Caro, Lina, Carrie etc.

For strong, feminine, three syllable and uncommon, what about Juliet? Nn Jules, Jet etc.

tindel · 22/09/2015 07:38

As a Caroline (although generally go by a nn), I can confirm that it's NEVER been popular.

I always thought it had a posh, pony-riding air to it, so surprised and secretly thrilled that so many people on here like it, as I always hated it growing up.

Lots of different nns though - I've met a Caz, Caro (particularly used in France and gorgeous with a French accent!), Callie.

Mehitabel6 · 22/09/2015 07:39

Both lovely.

MaltaVestrit · 22/09/2015 19:04

lots of people liking Caroline then! that's good! I think I'm coming round to it!

tindel why did you hate it growing up if you don't mind me asking?

shoot I really like Juliet/Juliette actually, will suggest to DH...

malta it's DD's name - we have had so many compliments and we've not yet met another one. I'm really pleased with it :)
