Thoughts on Alfred?

Dp suggested it a few days ago, I think I love it - guessing would be known as Alfie and this I'm not so keen on as there are soooo many around.
Would a baby Alfred be just too old fashioned and strange these days??

Like Alfred. Like Fred.

Dislike Freddie.

Hate Alfie.

DS is Alfred, nn Freddie and Fred

He might choose himself to be nicknamed Alfie - if you don't like it, don't use Alfred.

Personally Alfred is much too popular (not trying to have a unique kid, I just don't want multiple children with my childs name in the same class) and I don't really understand why - it reminds me of pasta dishes and old men.

Alfred's outside the top 100 btw. Freddie's 20, Alfie's top ten.

If you don't like Alfie as a potential nns choose something else.
Yes I know you can get Fred or Freddie but your DS might opt to be known as Alfie, which is entirely up to him

I have a pre-Alfie being incredibly popular Alfred and he is 16. It's been top ten for a long time!

I think the likelihood of an Alfred becoming an Alfie is very high, although I suppose if there are lots of them around so they might end up with a differentiator too, or maybe a nickname.

Where we live now Alfred/Alfie is a very unusual name that even gets misspelled (with a ph) so its not been an issue for us. ds is named after Alfred the Great (dh is a history geek).

MamaLazarou · 06/09/2015 17:38

Alfred is a great name but I dislike 'Alfie' very strongly indeed.

MackerelOfFact · 06/09/2015 17:39

I don't really like Alfred (although prefer it to Alfie) - but love Wilfred/Wilf which is along the same lines. Like Wilbur even more.

QforCucumber · 06/09/2015 17:42

I don't hate Alfie - understand it would be used as a nn, just wouldn't choose to name him just as Alfie as I know is fashionable at the minute, so would call him Alfred myself at home.
I have a brother who family have always called by his full name even though friends call him the shortened so it's not that much of an issue. Have asked around friends with babies and children at nursery and looks as though locally the 'alfie' craze are all.3/4 years old now so I think it may be a sticker for us.
So far out of hundreds of names it's the only one we can agree on.
