Advice on name

I have a favourite boys name and on MN people didn't really like it much but I still love it. I've tested it past a few people in real life and although one loved it, one told me she thinks it's a stupid name and my son would be bullied with this name. What should I do? I adore the name and can't find another name that even comes close :-( it's an old male name (although it's now popular in America for girls) but it's a male name from the 1930s and I love it. The name is Avery. Is it really really bad? Is there anything else I might like?

As I read your op I was thinking "what the hell crackpot name is this going to be?". Then when you said, I thought "oh I really like that!"

Go for it I say

How about Davery? Smile

I love Avery. There was a RC cardinal of this name in the US. His father lent his name to Dulles Airport in DC.

Ryan and Rory are used for girls in the US, so I wouldn't bother looking over my shoulder in that direction, tbh.

And names like Sam and Joe (Jo), mentioned by a PP, or even Charlie, could go either way. Don't worry about unisex names.

Thanks everyone! Ps Davery! Love this hehe :-)

There is a male Avery on Nashville. He was an arse but is turning into a nice guy

purplemunkey · 06/09/2015 11:32

I was thinking of Avery on Nashville too Smile

Yes, he was an arse in season 1 but is now a nice guy. I've always liked his name.

Junosmum · 06/09/2015 20:10

It's fine. Don't run it past people, in RL or on MN! Once you have a child and present it with its name no one will comment.

TabithaTwitchEye · 06/09/2015 20:33

I think it's just lovely.

mathanxiety · 07/09/2015 07:12

Actually there was a baby Charley baptised in my church this weekend. A girl.

Wishful80smontage · 07/09/2015 07:20

If you like it use it.
We also made the mistake of mentioning our favourite name when expecting dd and had 2 family members saying they didn't like it- we still used it but obviously I know how they felt about the name initially. We love the name and it suits dd so that's all that matters.
Although this time round out choice is staying secret I don't want any more 'name advice' ;)

Pipilangstrumpf · 07/09/2015 11:37

I think Avery is a great name! Cool, underused and kids will just associate your son with the name. There are far more bullyworthy names out there (e.g. Willy for William etc).

I'd love to meet a little boy Avery - go for it if you love the name!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 07/09/2015 18:58

Sorry I dont want to upset or offend you but seems very pretty and effeminate to me. Even though the only Avery I have ever come across is the little boy on Charlotte's Web.

AlmaMartyr · 07/09/2015 19:23

Ah, glad you're going for it! I've always thought of it as a male name, it's lovely.

My DD has a 'wacky and unusual' name - it is a real name and is a family name, not really wacky at all. So do quite a few other kids at their school and I've never known any of them get bullied for it, children just accept the names they hear (I think). DD loves her name too!

goldglittershitter · 07/09/2015 19:31

It's unusual but not weird. They type of name the baby grows in to. Am sure ur DS will rock it Smile .

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 08/09/2015 16:19

Avery just makes me think of supermarket scales.

Although it is the name of the brother in "charlottes web"

There are far worse names out there.

jaggy77 · 10/09/2015 18:53

It sounds a bit sexist for me to say, but I don't mind unisex names for girls, but I mind them for boys. How about Everett? It has the same feeling to me....

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 10/09/2015 18:57

Avery is fab.

Just as long as you don't have an awkward surname for 'a very.....'

I get so sick of the idea that the second a name is a bit unisex it won't do for a boy. It's the unspoken misogyny that annoys me.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 10/09/2015 18:59

I would give an obviously male middle name. It will make his life easier when form filling etc. I have a friend with two unisex names who gets the wrong titles on stuff annoyingly regularly
