Mia - a generational name???

Dh loves the name Mia and would love to use it if bump turns out to be a girl (25 weeks and keeping it a surprise). I've always loved Mia as well but worry it will be a bit of a one generation name. A bit like Sharon/Tracey or Gemma/Kelly. Do you think it will remain a popular baby name or gradually die out?
Our second choice is Imogen x

All names that become very fashionable will, by definition, fall out of favour again and start to sound dated. Not sure Mia is super trendy but I do know a lot of Mayas.

Personally I think Imogen is a more timeless choice.

steppemum · 03/09/2015 13:46

yes, definitely generational.

Does that matter?
I have adult friends called Sharon, Karen, Gemma, Wendy etc, and they are fine, they are names of their time. No-one thinks their names are strange.

And it has always been so, my Mum's generation are all called Anne and Mary

PennyHasNoSurname · 03/09/2015 13:49

It is generational, but so is Imogen and it really doesnt matter. Choose a name you love. Personally I much prefer Mia to Imogen.

reuset · 03/09/2015 14:06

Yes, probably.

happymummyone · 03/09/2015 14:20

Go with Imogen, (totally biased) I know Old Imogen's and young Imogen's, but only seem to find Mia's under the age of 25.

Pleurepaslabouchepleine · 03/09/2015 14:23

My dd is called Mia and she is fantastic ! Not sure it helps Smile

Sophronia · 03/09/2015 14:28

I'd say both Mia and Imogen are generational.

ShadowLine · 03/09/2015 14:32

Most names are generational. You can pretty much guarantee that any popular name will fall out of fashion and become disused sooner or later .

SunshineAndShadows · 03/09/2015 14:34

Mia farrow
Not exactly current.
But yes Mia is more well known now than it was and name trends do tend to cycle

ThePug · 03/09/2015 14:50

I thought Mia was a nn for Amelia. Could you use Amelia officially so there's more choice for her later on?

Mrsjayy · 03/09/2015 14:55

Oh i know an adult Mia well 29 but it doesnt matter i have a name of my time it doesnt sound naff i prefer Mia to imogen

Sophronia · 03/09/2015 15:41

I think Mia was traditionally a nn for Maria.

UrbaneFox · 03/09/2015 15:47

I went to school with a Mia and I know another adult mia, so to me, Imogen is more generation specific.

Squooshed · 03/09/2015 15:47

I know so many little Mias. It seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.

But as someone else has said most names date to some degree.

SmugairleRoin · 03/09/2015 19:38

I really think Imogen and Mia are both generational. I think most names do date to a certain degree.
Does it really matter though? When people meet her in years to come they'll have a rough idea what decade she was born in anyway. A timeless name is nice, sure, but it's not the be all and end all.

Personally, I hate the name Imogen, so I'd go for Mia. But it's much of a muchness as to them being generational.

TheNewStatesman · 04/09/2015 12:29

I think Imogen has become a lot more popular recently too.

AlphabetStew · 05/09/2015 20:32

I love the name Mia as a middle name. It means 'mine'. (Sally) Mia, My (Sally).

mathanxiety · 06/09/2015 04:44

I would avoid both and use Mila instead.

dementedma · 06/09/2015 19:16

Mia and Maya are very common at the moment I think.

mrsschu · 07/09/2015 08:22

Yes it probably will date. If you don't know any (or many) who are over lets say 5 and you know a load under that age, then it's a safe bet it will date. In saying that I know a lot more Maya's than Mia's so not sure it's as popular? As other posters noted it's probably not a huge issue though. I have a name that was popular in the late 70s and early 80s and it works well for my age (and I'm very happy with it although shock horror, there were two other girls in my year at school with the same name Wink).

MakStout · 07/09/2015 08:26

I have a Mia. She gets Mimi at home. I think its a lovely name, obviously Grin

Emochild · 07/09/2015 08:34

The problem I have with Mia is I know several

Some are pronounced me-a, and some my-a and I can never remember which are which

As a brownie leader with 9 girls called Mia coming through my pack in the last 3 years its been quite frustrating for me and them!

fleurdelacourt · 07/09/2015 10:33

Mia/Mya/Maya - yes very of this period.

Imogen is not nearly so popular and so won't date. (also much nicer IMO)

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 13:43

I love Mia. It reminds me of a friend who is Mia as a nickname and she's just the loveliest :)

chrome100 · 09/09/2015 14:47

I don't think it is. I know Mias and Imogens of all ages. Well, my age (mid thirties) and younger.
