Sister for Rupert and Grace

Name changed so I can't be outed!

I can't find a girls name I like. I find boys names much easier. Currently pregnant but not due until February so a bit of time.

Will be sibling to Rupert and Grace. Has cousins Alice, Phoebe and George which are names I like but can't obviously can't use.

If it is a boy we will go for Oscar James. Other names we liked were Finn, Ben, Theo and Felix.

That should give you a good idea of our taste. We don't like anything too unusual. I prefer short, classical names. I don't like shortening names to nicknames, I'd rather go with the shorter version. We aren't posh but live in a nice rural village in Surrey.

Please don't out me if you recognise me!

Please don't be offended, the following are names we've discarded and why:

Emily, Lucy, Sophie, Kate, Chloe - bit boring

Charlotte, Henrietta, Tabitha, Beatrice too long.

Poppy, Lily, Daisy - not keen on flower names.

Thea - really like but feels incomplete.

We're not going to find a name we like are we?

What about Thalia? It's one of the three graces so would fit nicely with Grace.

Quite a few suggestions.

I didn't have a shortlist for Grace, it was always a name I loved for a girl, I chose it 20 years ago and luckily DH liked it too. She is Grace Eloise.

The only other girls name I did quite like was Elsa. However that has been well and truly spoilt by Frozen. For me personally, Elsie is a bit cutesy and very popular. I don't like names ending in that sort of e sound.

No name is jumping out still. I really like Matilda (despite being long) but my Mum has a cat called Matilda.

Our surname is long, hence my preference for short names.

Thalia is an interesting choice - is it pronounced "thay-lia" or "tay-lia" ... The fact I don't know does put me off. They will forever be spelling out and correcting our surname so first name needs to be easy!

I think it is pronounced Ta-leeya?

Isn't that a rice?

Has anyone suggested Vera? I know it's a little old-fashioned but I met a young woman called Vera lately and it struck me that it's a very simple and elegant name once you get past the mental image of it belonging to a white-haired older lady!

Also it's quite a nice pair with Grace if you're into that sort of thing, as it can be interpreted as either having Slavic origins meaning 'faith', or Latin origins meaning 'truth', so another virtue-name...

ProvisionallyAnxious · 30/08/2015 14:28

Ada is another pre-WWII name which I think is quite nice...

Ooh I love Vera. It's on my list with Adelaide of names that DP hates Grin

Ava is cute as is Skye and Isla. I don't know whether the latter two have too much of a modern feel for you.

Names that cannot be really 'shorterned' are difficult to think of!

NoName82 · 30/08/2015 17:16

Thanks all but I have to be honest and say there are no names I'd shortlist still. A few I quite like but are the names of friends and their children who we see regularly.

Quite a few names suggested are still fairly long which just don't work with our long surname and rest of the family.

I actually like Skye but don't have any connection to the place and DH says it's a hippy name and people wouldn't take her seriously. It doesn't fit with our surname (think along the lines of Worethangtonney - although that's not it - while I've outed myself to anyone who knows me I don't want this thread to show up on a Google search for my exact name).

When filling out forms etc a short name is a blessing - both DH and I have four letter names. I was worried Rupert was too long with six characters, that really is my limit.

I really like Hattie by the way but not so keen on Harriet or Henrietta. It just sounds too much of a nickname to be the given name .

Thanks for all the suggestions and sorry to be so difficult!

Have you looked up lists online for short girls names?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/a1505133-quirky-pretty-short-girls-names-suggestions

An old thread, perhaps something may inspire you there?

Tuppence is everything I'm not keen on in one name! Long, a word that isn't typically a name, cutesy sounding, not going to be taken seriously, is going to get shortened ...

A few off that other thread to discuss with DH though thanks
