I really like the name Rupert. We want a traditional but uncommon name- does Rupert fit the bill?
Is it too posh?

I like the name. I knew a very nice Rupert who wasn't posh. More like Jarvis Cocker. But I still tend to think of Rupert Campbell Black first.

ClaraBean · 27/08/2015 22:41

I really like Rupert, but in my head I hear Rupert Bears mother calling him from the front door 'Roooopeeeerrrrt'. Like that Grin
I don't think it is too posh at all. No more posh than Jasper or Felix, which are everywhere now.

DimpleHands · 29/08/2015 13:02

My DS is called Rupert Smile. DH and I both love it - DS is 2.9 now and we said to each other just the other day how pleased we were we had called him it.

We were planning on using "Bear" as a nickname, which I also really like, although actually we've always stuck with Rupert.

Wolpertinger · 29/08/2015 13:10

Are you posh? Everyone will assume he is posh.

On a course I was on, someone was roleplaying a bullying surgeon. She called him Rupert and everyone understood why and instantly knew his whole backstory Grin

On the other hand I know a lovely Rupert. He's also a surgeon and definitely posh though Confused

Rupert is definitely one of those names that hasn't transferred out of the realms of the posh, I think.

The only one I've ever met was definitely very posh. He had the accent, the weak chin, and the public school education Grin

Squooshed · 29/08/2015 14:46

Comedy posh. Just sounds a bit.......ridiculous.

There are much nicer posh names if that's the style that appeals to you.

StevieJo · 30/08/2015 11:03

I think of Rupert Grint the Harry Potter actor, it's growing on me :)

scatterthenuns · 31/08/2015 20:54

Works very well on Rupert Grint. I like it.

reuset · 31/08/2015 21:01

If you feel you need to ask if it's too posh (for you or in general) then it possibly is.

I like it and think it's a good solid old name. The Ruperts I know and have known have just been ordinary middle class rather than very 'posh' Though I wonder if I would make assumptions about social class just seeing it on paper and I think maybe, yes.

RachelZoe · 31/08/2015 21:23

I don't like it at all. It's too "twee posh" for me. I put it in the "Tarquin" kind of category.

Shockers · 31/08/2015 21:26

Love it. It reminds me of my childhood (and my childhood dog, but I reckon we were the only ones with a dog named Rupert and that was only because I loved the name!)

Shockers · 31/08/2015 21:28

And I know a very cool, grown up Roo.

BlueBananas · 31/08/2015 21:33

Rupert Ruper Ru-upert Bear...

mrsschu · 01/09/2015 16:52

It does sound posh I suppose but that's fine if that's what you're going for. I'm not a fan, it sounds quite weak.

mrsschu · 01/09/2015 16:53

P.S. I knew one whose nn was Roops, awful...

PattyPenguin · 01/09/2015 21:52

"The Ruperts" is the term used for posh army officers in Terry Pratchett's novel "Monstrous Regiment".

Because "Rupert" is genuine British army slang for an officer, "but particularly one who is upper-middle class or above, and has a total lack of skill or common sense".

Fantasy fans and anyone with a connection to the military would probably avoid the name.

notaprincessbutaqueen · 03/09/2015 12:52

my friends son is Rupert. I love it and they are not posh at all.

Gummibaers · 03/09/2015 13:50

I'm sure most of us know all sorts of Ruperts, just as we know all sorts of Toms, Dicks and Harrys! I tend to judge them on their personality and character, not their name. Choose a name you love imo!

Vixxfacee · 03/09/2015 13:51

Horrible name.

ToesAndFingersCrossed · 03/09/2015 15:56

I love the name, but I was in a coffee shop the other day and the guy in front of me was giving his name to the barista and it went something like this:

"Rupert"
"Huh?"
"Rupert"
"Robert?"
"No, Roo-pert"
"Er..."
"Rupert the bear."
"Oh! Rupert!"

PigletJohn · 03/09/2015 16:31

Have you not considered that one day this sweet little baby will be a grown man?
