We absolutely love Clementine (pronounced "Clementeen") for our DD. But now I am starting to have second thoughts - does it verge just on the wrong side of ridiculous? We are mildly hippy MC types (sorry if the categorising offends people - just trying to give people a good picture) who swing between off the wall names and very trad but unusual ones (the most important thing being not boring). I expect she will be 'Clemmie'.

But does it pass the (probably silly) Prime Minister/CEO test? I know Clementine is growing in popularity now really, especially where we live right now, so that is maybe what's putting me off as well (the logic being if we're going to pick a name that doesn't pass the PM test, then at least it shouldn't be too popular? - or am I just overthinking it now?)

I really would like to know people's thoughts.

You'd hope so. I'm not convinced though and so I'd try to avoid naming a kid something that has negative connotations - particularly as I'm assuming it's slang in the UK where I'm guessing op is. She could have to move for work (op that is, with the daughter).

I love it, gorgeous name! I will admit my first instinct is to pronounce it Clem an Tyne but the Clem an teen pronunciation is much nicer.

NoMoreRenting · 29/08/2015 15:45

It's not slang in the UK. It's slang in one region of the UK. NE, I think.

rillery · 29/08/2015 17:24

I've never heard of that use of 'clem' before. Clem/Clemmed/Clemming actually means to be hungry, starved.

They're always Clemmie or Clem though (Clements and Clementines). I don't think it's hippy/MC just very 'now' and fashionable. There seems to be one in every toddler group in my area.

SmugairleRoin · 29/08/2015 17:43

That's what I meant, NoMore.

Love it,will use it if i have another girl

Clemsaplenty · 05/09/2015 11:21

Hi. Actually registered with Mumsnet to reply to this. What a faff!

I'm a Clementine. LOVE MY NAME. I'm a bit of a tomboy anyway but to me, the name doesn't sound too girly. I always get good reactions to my name and love that for people my age it is pretty rare.

I do agree that the nickname Clemmie isn't the most beautiful combination of sounds but once you attach that to a person I think it's fine.

Also - and this would horrify those in the NE Who have posted on this thread - those close to me actually call me Clems. No one has ever mentioned the testicle connection in 30 years. So I think it'll be fine. (though she will have to get used to men asking her if she's "juicy" Hmm)

Short version - do it!

Are you a tyne or a teen, Clems?

Clemsaplenty · 05/09/2015 16:35

Teen. It's the only way.

KERALA1 · 08/09/2015 13:50

Mine is 6 we love it obviously. Pronounce Tyne though. Know some people hate it have had some blank looks (usually from people with dc with extremely conventional names) so it is abit marmite. Suits dd perfectly though. Was reading a book about Churchill while I was pregnant and just felt right.

Chuggsbugs · 23/10/2015 23:54

I love it and have a Clementine ('teen'). So pretty, elegant and uncommon. DD is just over 1 and I have only come across two others in our area (of Greater London). I loved it from the start of my pregnancy and it was the only name I truly could not part with amongst the sea of other lovely but also very popular names, when we had to choose (DD was almost 6 weeks old!). My DD certainly lives up the meaning of the name and is very gentle, merciful and sweet-natured indeed. Ours is sometimes shortened to Clemmie but only within the family so far.

There were only 104 little girls named Clementine in 2014 and 88 in 2013. So very slowly creeping up from the high to lower 400's in ranking in more recent times.

cornishglos · 24/10/2015 06:56

Do it. What a lovely name!

SparklyTinselTits · 24/10/2015 07:01

Clementine is pretty....but shortening it to Clem or Clemmie just reminds me of phlegm Blush God forbid she get a horrible cold one day at school and get called "phlegmy Clemmie" Blush
If you're going for it, I would stick to Clementine. Or if you must shorten it, I would call her "tiney" or something using the last syllable not the first!
