Mildly posh, long, classic girl's names?? Please help!

Hi! Three months till baby and I'm completely stuck for girl's names.
Big hitch is our surname, which is one of those ridiciously posh, like laugh out loud, old english surnames- think Cholmondley or Beaufort, double barrel it and you're there. I would love to use a flouncy, unusual name like Arabella or Seraphina but saying the full name out loud sounds like a made up posh person name.On the other hand a "modern" or (sorry) "chavvy" name really doesn't fit. We still want to go with a long name, preferably one with potential for nicknames.
For boys I've got Jonathan and Frederick. Both outside the top 100 but still classic and recognisable, with lots of shortenings- I can't stand calling babies long names.
Ideas so far:
Catarina: Love nns Cara and Tara, but the most obvious would be Cat, which I can't stand
Rosemary: Nice, but a touch too old lady
Cordelia: Love, but bit too posh, and dh's ex-girlfriends name
Sorry it's so long!!

Both of my DDs' names are on here, although I don't think they are posh (one is an old German family name, the other is biblical).

Big Hitch is a pretty hard surname to match.

Ignore it, find names you like, (ignore "posh"ness because that's a wee bit twattish) and work out whether they work with your surname or not. With any luck, your DD will marry in 25 years and ditch your surname anyhow Hmm

YumMum94 · 25/08/2015 23:32

wow this is trending! thanks teatowel jojo is much better! Antigone is nice as well. Just out of interest, what do people find so bad about Davina? It's an old family name but the only thread on mumsnet about it seems to get a lot of hate. is it because of the association with Davina McCall?

Seraphina is beutiful but I'd rather the spelling Serafina (as I love Pullman's Serafina Pekkala character in His Dark Materials Trilogy.) It could be abbreviated to Phee.

other ideas
Lizbet
Helena
Lyra
... but Seraphina is the most beautiful name for a girl.

I love long flowery girls names BUT we have a short 1 syllable surname so long first names suit it well. I would be more inclined to use a shorter name to go with a double barrelled surname, eg

Ruth
Jane
Amy
Lara
Janet
Clara
Helen
Rachel
Hazel
Eliza
Roberta
Thora
Phoebe
Marina

Those names are all quite 'strong' rather than flowery but all also classic and feminine.

Capewrath · 26/08/2015 00:02
