  1. Girl or Boy?
  2. How would you pronounce it?
  3. Is it a 'posh' or 'pretentious' name?
  4. Would you instantly relate it to any brands of anything?

Boy
Lie-ll
Quite the opposite, sounds like kyle
Did make me think of sugar!

fairyfeatures · 21/08/2015 13:16

Thanks dragon glad it's not posh or pretentious and dammit I do have one of those cousins called Kyle, although I hadn't connected Kyle and Lyle myself.
You'll never believe me, but I absolutely love Tate too!! Blush

Lyle Lovett.

NotAllThoseWhoWanderAreLost · 21/08/2015 13:41

Definitely boy
As in 'Kyle'
Not at all, the opposite
Tate and Lyle and Lyle's Golden Syrup are the obvious ones. It's a good ol'boy American name to me, as in Lyle Lovett the country singer or 'Sheriff Lyle Doohickey of the Smalltown Indiana police department' with the relevant connotations!

TwistyKnicksFuckOff · 21/08/2015 14:15

Lyle Lovett & sugar.

fairyfeatures · 21/08/2015 14:26

I'm not familiar with Lyle Lovett but looked him up.

I'm glad you say pronounced like Kyle - I worry that with our accent it would end up pronounced lie-ull. Longggggggg, drawn out and not a quick one syllable name as it should be!

Thank you :)

Oh and yes I do want it for a boy :)

I taught a Lyle years ago. Nice chap in a state school. Pronounced to rhyme with Kyle but this particular lad was different to the Kyles I've known.

At the time I had no association with anything - it was just his name.

I like it, you should go with it.

happymummyone · 21/08/2015 14:34
  1. boy
  2. lye-el
  3. not posh or pretentious, unusual rather
  4. a nice tin of sticky golden syrup
DurhamDurham · 21/08/2015 14:37

I immediately thought of Tate and Lyle or the singer Lyle Lovett (wasn't he going out with Julian Roberts at one point....I could just be making that last bit up!)

I'm not immediately drawn to the name but it might grow on me the more I say it so I'll get back to you with an update Grin

Tiggeryoubastard · 21/08/2015 14:38

Puppy
Lile
Absolutely the opposite! So not posh. Hideous.
Tate and Lyle

fairyfeatures · 21/08/2015 14:39

That's good to know thankyou Indomitable

He actually married Julia Roberts Durham - lasted 2 years.

Thanks, I'll look forward to it growing on you! Grin

Boy, Laisle-rhymes-with-aisle, and its Golden Syrup. Give it up.

WankerDeAsalWipe · 21/08/2015 16:24

I know one but it is Lyall not Lyle, I think I prefer the Lyall spelling to be honest. Lyle seems like it is missing something. I'd pronounce them both the same though as Lye-ell. Definitely a boys name and I quite like it.

Cookie122 · 21/08/2015 20:12

i like it

CakeRattleandRoll · 23/08/2015 07:25

Boy
To rhyme with smile
No
Tate and Lyle = sugar

Much prefer Tate for a name!

bittapitta · 23/08/2015 07:26

What about Lionel?

Shockers · 23/08/2015 07:30

I must've read a book with a Lyle in because, for no apparent reason, it makes me think of someone who is unkempt and shifty.

WishIWasWonderwoman · 23/08/2015 12:06

I'm afraid I think of this bloke from the terrible glorious film George of the Jungle.

Definitely would assume a boy.

I would pronounce Lyle the same as Lyall (Lie-ill)

It doesn't seem 'posh' to me. Average (or lower class?) name in my opinion.

I think of Lyle guns with your spelling see here which is positive! They were a rescue device. Smile

Boy
To rhyme with Kyle
Sounds American rather than posh. Not a criticism.
Tate and Lyle.

Junosmum · 23/08/2015 21:56

To rhyme with Kyle, aisle and smile. I instantly think Tate and Lyle, golden syrup. I don't like it, think it's 'wet' but that's my personal opinion. If you like it use it! I don't know any lyles and I'm sure if I did my opinion would reflect the person I knew.

fairyfeatures · 24/08/2015 13:07

Thank you for all of your input :)

To me, it is Lyle that rhymes with Kyle.
I agree with the American sounding Ellen
Tate & Lyle is the only association for me really, one I am not too bothered by. - Cake - I absolutely love Tate and it would be my first choice but unfortunately, it is disastrous with surname. Devastated.
And to me, I don't think it sounds opposite to posh and don't think it would to my nearest and dearest either, so can cross that out.

As it happens, a friend of mine is due in the same month as me and told me her boy's name (should she have one) and it turned out to be my Number 1 name choice. Turns out she is having a girl and that name is now freed up again for me to use (she knew I liked it too so not stepping on toes!) So Lyle is currently in 2nd place.

Thanks again Flowers

Boy

Rhymes with "smile" - I hear that as two syllables, but only just.

No, just a bit unusual

Mostly makes me think of a boy DS1 used to know. I didn't like him very much but I liked his name. I think of syrup if I deliberately think about what else it could be associated with, but it's not my first thought.
