Just that really.

Do you like it? Do you know of any, where are they from and what were they like?

Is it pronounced the same as 'I'm a…' ?

Because if it is, it's going to bring her a whole heap of trouble. I wouldn't risk it. It's not that nice anyway.

LineRunner · 10/08/2015 19:15

It's Hebrew for mother / mum. That's my knowledge of it, anyway. Pronounced eem-a.

YAsoNBU · 10/08/2015 19:16

What were they like?

Because your name determines what kind of person you are Hmm

FenellaFellorick · 10/08/2015 19:17

eema?

that sounds nice enough but yes, she'll have a lifetime of explaining it's not I'm a....

No, I don't know any, it's not a name I've heard before.

Lurleene · 10/08/2015 19:17

Ima Frayed Not, sorry.

InTheBox · 10/08/2015 19:17

Yes LineRunner --> IsItMeOrIsItHotInHere it's pronounced 'eem-a'

Am I mistaken it is a typical dutch name, or was someone lying to me?

according to this, it's a variant of Emma

chipsandpeas · 10/08/2015 19:23

written down i would think it was ina misspelled

Mmbop · 10/08/2015 19:28

I've never heard it before. I think I like it pronounced eema, not eye-ma though.

Naoko · 10/08/2015 19:31

I'm Dutch, and I've never heard the name before. I know a woman called 'Ina' (same kind of pronunciation), I think it's short for something but not sure what - possibly Wilhemina, although Mina or Mien would be the more common shortening. Not very modern though.

There's also 'Ieme', which is a male name you might hear in the Northern, Frisian-speaking part of the country.

CarriesBucketOfBlood · 10/08/2015 19:36

I hope your DC never falls in love with a Mr Knobbe or Hoare.

SmugairleRoin · 10/08/2015 19:47

Sounds pretty op, but I think she'd be driven mad by constantly having to explain how to pronounce it.

iamabear · 10/08/2015 20:14

I agree that it sounds like 'I'm a...', but then i've always thought that Isla always sounds too much like 'I'll er... (make a cake, for example)' but that doesn't seem to have put people off!

mammmamia · 10/08/2015 20:19

Is it pronounced the same as the Irish name Eimear? Because I like that more than Ima even though they sort of sound the same.

GladysTheGolem · 10/08/2015 20:20

I like Ida, Ava etc but I've never heard of it.

Costacoffeeplease · 10/08/2015 20:22

To me, it looks like it should be Irma

mammmamia · 10/08/2015 20:22

Actually I think Eimear has more of an 'r' sound on the end so sounds a bit softer. Can you use that instead?

UptheAnty · 10/08/2015 20:22

Ima is Hebrew for mother.

sleeponeday · 10/08/2015 20:23

I know an Ima. She's English and in her '60s. Was very beautiful as a young woman, if a bit troubled from what I've heard. Has had an interesting life.

She's the only one. With he it's pronounced Eema, though, not I'm A. I think most people would say it the second way? I was introduced before I ever saw it spelled.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 10/08/2015 20:26

I don't much like it sorry.

The potential for knock knock jokes is huge tho.

spiderlight · 10/08/2015 20:29

Your surname would be a major consideration as well - Ima Pratt would not have a good time at school!
