Cara Lucy or Helen Lucy?
Which do you prefer and why?
Surname begins with H and is 3 syllables.
Thanks.

Thoughthickandthin Fascinating! Personally I know Helens aged between 7 and 55, to me it doesn't seem like a dated name, although I hear Helena much more often.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 08/08/2015 07:47

I think of Helen as a 1960s/70s name.

There are a group of associated names (Elaine, Ellen, Eleanor, Elena, Helena, etc). Of these I'd say the most 'timeless' is probably Eleanor.

I do like Helen, but it doesn't really work with Lucy. Mind you, since most people rarely use there middle name this isn't a huge problem.

ch1134 · 08/08/2015 08:09

I don't think middle names are important but we'd be using Lucy as a family name. I prefer it to both Helen and Cara, but it's too similar to her brother's name unfortunately.
I do like Hannah, and love Anna, but thinking that they're too popular now.
I dislike Eleanor.

I don't mind 'dated' names. I prefer them actually, to names which are very 'now'.

Can you flip them - Lucy Helen, Lucy Cara
Can be known as second name

Might go better with the surname?

MaudeTheMopLady · 08/08/2015 08:50

I just like Lucy.

Lucy Helen??

MaudeTheMopLady · 08/08/2015 08:54

Sorry just read your post above...
I'm a Lucy and I love it.
I had a similar name to my sibling and
We always really loved our names.

I think Helen is nice though.

ch1134 · 08/08/2015 09:21

Lucy goes with our surname much better and I love it. But I have a Lou! I really can't have Lou and Lu! So Lucy is out as a first name.

OP - I am with you. I find it odd when people say a name is dated. Unless they are advocating something timeless like Elizabeth . Any 'now' or fresh or modern name is going to be dated when she's older. I'd rather be out of step with trends.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2015 10:31

I was just answering the opening post libraries, I prefer Cara becsuse I think Helen is a dated name not due a revival yet. I would put Susan, Karen, Joanne, in that category as well. Sorry that you find it 'odd'!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2015 10:41

.....although as the op herself prefers dated names then I think she shoild chose Helen.

MaudeTheMopLady · 08/08/2015 10:51

I see what you mean ch! Lou and Lucy would be too similar..
Have you considered Lydia?

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 08/08/2015 11:04

I wasn't responding to any poster in particular. I just find it odd that 'dated' is considered a real problem and was agreeing with the OP on that. After all, give it 10 years and everyone will say Isabel and Cara and Lola and Isla are dated.Smile

ch1134 · 08/08/2015 18:27

Oh dear. Is Cara very 'now'? I like 70s/80s names. I love Susan, and Susannah, but can't have Lou and Sue! I also like Lydia a lot, but my husband doesn't (chlamydia).
I like the simplicity and meaning of Cara. It works in French/ Spanish and has links with Wales/ Cornwall. .. all of which are good for me.
Good suggestions. ..

I also like names which can be one syllable (Hen for Helen) if that helps?

What about Sarah OP?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2015 18:49

In that its not now, but not not now, a 70's/80's name , and a similarish sound to Cara

SmugairleRoin · 09/08/2015 22:18

Mara sounds stronger (imo anyway) than Cara op, if that would suit? Lara also nice but it wouldn't work with Lucy.

I much prefer Cara to Helen - Helen to me is just a bit staid.

SmugairleRoin · 09/08/2015 22:30

I think that, as Lucy is quite a strong sounding name, that you may need a first name with more syllables. So Victoria Lucy, Bianca Lucy or Georgia Lucy all flow much easier (to my ear anyway) than Cara/Helen Lucy.

Just thinking here...would you consider a name like Caroline Lucy and then nicknaming Cara?

LarrytheCucumber · 10/08/2015 16:18

Helen is lovely, and means 'shining one'. My DGM had the initials HH when she was born.
