Are these girl's names too strange?

I've not discussed names with the other half yet - he's from the UK, I'm not (European/Israeli roots). I'm looking for a name I could use on the continent as well as here. I have a feeling my taste in names is a little too weird for the UK though :) Would really appreciate it if you could have a look at my 'long list' and let me know if they'd be too out-there! Which are your favourites?

Imogen
Yuna
Indra
Elisheva
Celeste
Delta
Orla
Tirza
Yara
Ophelia

Thank you!

Orla apparently means foreskin in Hebrew so with Israeli roots I'd probably drop that.

I don't think the rest are too out there at all. You might have pronunciation problems with Elisheva but it's very very pretty.

MaddieUK · 08/08/2015 09:12

Ha it doesn't mean 'foreskin' exactly - there's a biblical term referring to 'uncircumcised fruit' (and therefore not to be eaten I think) that is called 'orla fruit'. It's a good point though - 'Orli' is quite a normal name in Israel and Orla might be too close to that, but I think Orli sounds quite masculine.

I like most of those names and don't think they are too out there. Indra is probably my favourite but DD1 has a similar name and I work with a lovely girl with a similar name so I'm biased.

Final Fantasy :) Can't say I played them all but I'm definitely a gamer, so I wouldn't even mind that too much. Can't shake off the Tuna reference now though!

ShadowStar · 08/08/2015 18:44

Tuna is surely just a spellchecker thing though?

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 08/08/2015 19:04

Elisheva is lovely, but may have pronunciation issues, if that bothers you.

The others vary from rare to popular but are all perfectly useable.

Nice list.Smile

ashesandfire · 08/08/2015 21:58

Imogen is a brilliant name ;) (it's my name)
I also like Celeste and I think Elisheva is lovely.

MrsBungle · 08/08/2015 22:02

I like Orla and Celeste.

thegreylady · 08/08/2015 22:05

I love Imogen and Celeste although Elisheva is also pretty.

carriebrody · 08/08/2015 22:10

I like Imogen, Orla and Una rather than Yuna.

Ophelia seems a bit prententious to me and not keen on Celeste (pill?). Isn't Indra a god?

Elisheva is lovely and unusual.

SmugairleRoin · 09/08/2015 21:38

I really hate the name Imogen, I don't know why. The sound just irritates me.

Orla, Yara and Delta are lovely imo. Celeste too but I'd be less likely to pick it.

SmugairleRoin · 09/08/2015 21:39

And poor Ophelia in Hamlet had such a tragic story, I could never name a child after her.

SmugairleRoin · 09/08/2015 21:42

As for Yuna, all I am hearing in my head is "You now!" sort of slurred together...it's an alright name but I really can't shake that association.

Elisheva v unusual but I do like it.

SniffsAndSneezes · 10/08/2015 08:06

Not to keen on Yuna, Yara or Delta but I like all the others. Elisheva is probably my favourite. I actually know someone called Tirza Smile

lottiegarbanzo · 10/08/2015 08:27

Ophelia will be the butt of 'I feel your' jokes at some point.

Orla is popular as an anglicisation of the Irish Orlaith.

Yara sounds like an Australian term to me, though not sure for what.

But really, there are plenty of unusual names around, these are not the most unusual most people will have come across.

Thank you for the comments everyone :) Really appreciate it.

Elisheva and Delta are my favourites of those.

almapudden · 12/08/2015 17:19

I love Elisheva. Don't like Yuna or Tirza but the others are also nice.

Andante57 · 12/08/2015 17:23

Orla is beautiful - I wish I'd thought of that for my dd.

villainousbroodmare · 12/08/2015 19:35

I like them all, Celeste possibly least, Elisheva best. I don't see an spelling or pronunciation issue with Elisheva... even though I've never heard it before, I think it's pretty self-explanatory.

mathanxiety · 13/08/2015 04:07

I love Elisheva, and also Tirza (and the variation Thirza). Indra is nice too.

Orla is the standard modern Irish spelling -- I would avoid it if you are going to be living in continental Europe as the R won't be pronounced properly (it doesn't get pronounced properly in non rhotic English accents either).
Another here who dislikes Imogen.
Delta is too alpha beta gamma - technical or nautical..
Celeste reminds me of one of the Babar elephants.
Yuna and Yara would be odd for Europe. (Plus Yuna-Tuna..)
Ophelia would be fine in Europe but a little difficult in the UK.

MaddieUK · 13/08/2015 15:01

It's interesting how Elisheva seems to be the favourite choice... certainly never expected that :)

@mathanxiety - hope you weren't up at 4am but that you're in a nice sunny country somewhere!

I really like Elisheva too - had never heard it before but think it is gorgeous! Smile
