Alvin or Theodore

Hi.
Firstly, no, we aren't obsessed with the Chipmunks. However...
Me and my wife are expecting our first child (a boy) and have been struggling to find a name we like. We finally found Theodore which we adore, however while watching Bake Off we noticed the name Alvin and both love it! Looking into the name Alvin and it doesn't seem too popular. What do people think of both names?

I prefer Simon.

But seriously, Theo is fine. Alvin is just a chipmunk.

DiscoDiva70 · 06/08/2015 23:31

I prefer Theodore as you can shorten it to Theo or Teddy, Alvin is nice but would others shorten that to Al I wonder, which isn't so nice

APlaceOnTheCouch · 06/08/2015 23:35

I prefer Theo.

Alvin reminds me of Alvin Stardust which doesn't seem to match a baby and I'd worry he'd want to wear white jumpsuits when he grew up.

theendoftheendoftheend · 06/08/2015 23:36

Theodore. Alvin was always too gobby for my liking.

Sophronia · 07/08/2015 01:26

I like Alvin! Theodore is too popular and boring to me now.

Doublebubblebubble · 07/08/2015 08:24

Theodore 100%. You can shorten it to Theo/Ted/Teddy if need be too.
Can you imagine if he decided to run off and you're shouting "Alvinnnnnnnnn"after him... Not good.
He'll always have the chipmunk connotations with his name whether you like it or not. X good luck xx

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 07/08/2015 10:27

Theodore. He could opt to be called
Theo or Teddy.

Sorry but Alvin is just daft. Makes me think of the chipmunks.

BreeVDKamp · 07/08/2015 11:12

I like Theodore but yes it's popular. I don't like Alvin but have been umming and ahhing over Calvin lately. Do you like that? I loooove the shortening Cal, more than I like Calvin.

alzreik82 · 07/08/2015 11:31

Hi guys. Thanks for all your comments, have been helpful.

I'm not a fan of the name Calvin, BreeVDKamp. Sorry.

Theodore is still our number 1, however really looking for a name starting with A. Both myself, my father and father in law all have names starting with A. Any ideas? Perhaps I need to start a new thread for this one :)

I really like Theo but DH hates it (I reckon this is from association with Mr Walcott but he denies it) We both really like Teddy, but I wonder how that would look on job applications etc. So I am trying to get him to think of Theo and nn Teddy as a child...

Alvin doesn't do it for me either I'm afraid.

Archer is a lovely strong A name. Sounds like what you may be into - not too common but not unheard of either?

cosmicglittergirl · 07/08/2015 14:00

Alwyn Welsh
Alvar German
Alric German
Amon Irish
Arley Old English.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 07/08/2015 14:05

Not Alvin

any of the alternatives cosmic lists, or Theodore

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/08/2015 14:06

Alexander is a great Wink A name but is always top 20.

Theodore is way better than Alvin. Alvin is the definitive chipmunk, you have to have watched the films to know there is a chipmunk called Theodore as well.

Other A names:
Augustus
Archie (Archer/Archibald) but is popular just now
Angus
Adrian
Aiden
Aloysius
Ambrose

Caldini22 · 08/08/2015 07:05

I like Theodore. I am also associating Alvin with the chipmunks after the title of this thread, but not sure I would make that connection if it wasn't used with Theodore. I'm still not sure about Alvin though.

marinacortina · 08/08/2015 10:36

I used to work with an Alvin. I quite like it, unusual but not 'out there'. I haven't seen any of the chipmunk stuff. Lots of names have cartoon or fictional links though, and the associations often die away as time passes.

More unusual A names:

Alaric
Anselm
Alois

VixxFace · 08/08/2015 11:06

I know an alvin. He's a dick.

Theo is much better.

mrsb83 · 08/08/2015 11:17

I love theodore! Had it on my list for my DS but my husband can't pronounce the 'th' sound he says 'f' so I couldn't have it. I also love Theo as a name in its own right.

5446 · 08/08/2015 11:33

Are you Singaporean? Every other middle aged Singaporean-Chinese bloke seems to be called Alvin.

Hopesicles · 03/11/2015 00:09

Theodore - super cute! x

IoraRua · 03/11/2015 00:17

Alan Grin Would be unusual now!
Andrew
Eamonn (pronounced ay mon) - not sure if it's the sound or letter you specifically want
Aodh (pronounced ay) - Hugh in Irish
Ali
Alistair
Anthony (or Antonio)
Aloucious (I really cannot spell this one. My best guess at it)

Fwiw Alvin was my fave of those names.

GrinAndTonic · 03/11/2015 01:07

I now have the theme song stuck in my head.

In all honesty, if I heard someone yell 'Alvin' across a room I know I would follow with 'Simon Theodore'.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/11/2015 01:10

Alec?

LeaLeander · 03/11/2015 01:29

Abraham
Andrew
Anton
Ashton
Abel
Aristotle
Arthur
Avery

SquirrelledAway · 03/11/2015 10:14

Alva, after Thomas Alva Edison?

Belazu84 · 03/11/2015 12:53

Arlo?
Abel?

Not Alvin - pure chipmunk for me!
