A boy called Baxter?

My SIL is due her first baby later this year. They just had the 20 w scan and found out they're expecting a boy. They've told close family the gender, and the name they have in mind - Baxter. I've never heard this before. I tried to give a neutral response when she asked if I like it, I said it was unusual but easy to spell (??) But honestly I dislike it. It just reminds me of a dog's name. Anyone else know or having a baby Baxter? Is it just me, or is it not such a great name?

Ian Dury's son is Baxter Dury.

I'm not a fan of surnames as first names, but this doesn't seem a million miles away from the popular Dexter.

Yes, as Marina said, similar to Dexter. Not my taste at all, but I can see this having appeal to the modern transferred use of surname crowd.

Makes me think of Bert Baxter, the vile neighbour in the Adrian Mole books.

Nothing wrong with Baxter. I think Bax for short is cute! If I met a baby called Baxter, being petty to compare baby's name to a can of soup/ dog/ fictional character would be the last thing on my mind. :)

I love it!

As previous poster says, Baxter is the name of a female baker. That's what the word means. Why would anyone do that to a male child?

i know a Baxter, it suits him.

I hate surname names. Baxter is not one of my favourites within the genre either.

But it isn't awful objectively - it isn't badly spelled or particularly clichéd.
