Like Percy but not Percy?

I love the name Percy but I searched for old threads about it on this board and it looks like a resounding NO ("Percy Pig" / "pointing Percy at the porcelain" which I must admit I'd never heard before!)

Can anyone suggest a similar classic boys name that isn't Top 100? We like recognisable but obsolete...a lot to ask!

I love the name Vivian for a boy but that must be even more of an invitation to mocking than Percy! Warming to some other suggestions though.. Peter isn't such a bad idea.

I used to work with a Vivian - known as Viv.

Percy is pretty cool! I used to call the the little boy I nannied for Mr Percy as a nickname. Random but so cute! His actual name was completely different Grin

Sorry, but I like Percy, Bitta! Ignore the old threads. As with most opinion threads, depends a good deal on who disliked, and their general taste etc

Isn't Percy Jackson a good modern example, if you want good modern examples.

Similar, in my mind, would be:

Rufus
Ivan
Hugh
Mortimer

Ah sorry OP I'm in Scotland and I'd be amazed if it's top 100 here. I love Toby though (my boy has a 90-ish name in Scotland which means not that many in real terms sharing the name).
Jeremy?
Jasper?

I'm with SirPercy, just reminds me of Thomas The Tank Engine, which I have a DS partly named after one of the characters. (DS1 was Thomas obsessed!)

What about Basil?

Perry?

LocalEditorMerton · 05/08/2015 09:55

Herbert
Ron(ald) - think the Harry Potter Weasley family - one of the 'children' was Percy! The one who worked for the Ministry of Magic methinks?

PallasCat · 05/08/2015 10:11

How about...
Bertram
Reginald
August
Gabriel/Gabe
Edmund
Ernest
Bartholomew/Bart
Hector

I do like Percy too, though. How about Percival, to give a bit of flexibility with Percy as nn?

CarrotVan · 05/08/2015 13:36

Edwin, Claude, Eustace, Rupert - or any other Wodehouse characters...

froggyjump · 05/08/2015 13:51

Percy reminds me of Percy Jackson in the books by Rick Riordan - very cool teenager, half greek god, has loads of adventures.

I think it would fit in well with all the other old but cutsie names around now - Alfie, Albie, Freddie, Wilf, Reggie, etc etc

( and what small child would not like having sweeties named after them??)

TravellingToad · 05/08/2015 13:53

What about John?

It's not in the top 100 as far as I remember

Elvish · 05/08/2015 13:55

I like Percy and Basil, DS was nearly Percy after the engine - lots of good strong engine names about (have a look at the back of a Thomas book for inspiration).

Finola1step · 05/08/2015 13:56

Basil? Really?

CasualJersey · 05/08/2015 13:57

My first thought was Jonty
Then Bertie

bittapitta · 05/08/2015 15:00

Finola it's bad isn't it? I want something rare but not so rare people haven't heard of it. Fine line.

If going with engines then probably not Skarloey - no-one will ever pronounce it right...

CordeliaFoxx · 05/08/2015 15:16

Bertie is actually the name of the bus in Thomas the Tank!
