A baby called angus?

Me and DH love the name Angus for our DS1, due shortly.

DH is Scottish with a similarly Scottish first name, I am half Scottish, and we have a very Scottish surname. It's recently occurred to me that in a few months I need to ACTUALLY make an actual decision whether to bestow this name upon the very wriggly boy who is currently kicking me from the inside...

  1. I love the Irish spelling (Aengus) because of the Yeats poem, but DH thinks we would be condemning the poor boy to a lifetime of spelling corrections.

  2. Our surname also begins with A - but a different sound if that makes sense? Problem? It worked for Marylin Monroe...

  3. Will people constantly miss out the G in the middle? Confused

  4. Will he inevitably be called Gus? I don't mind Gus, but are there any other nicknames commonly used I should be aware of?

Fingers crossed he's ginger too Grin - my wee Scottish boy

ps. in case he REALLY doesn't look like an Angus, any other names in a similar vein that aren't Fergus (close friend's son), Hamish (I love but DH says is 'too scottish Grin), or Douglas (already in use)?

I have a 14 year old Angus. Lovely name - nn Gus. Never had a problem with Anus! But he was called Fungus for a bit at Primary School (regret to say that I laughed when he told me!)

There are some really lovely names on here. I think Angus Alexander sounds brilliant, do go for it:)

We have an Angus though we are in Scotland so not unusual at all.

  1. I wouldn't go with Aengus - mis-spellings will become annoying
  2. AA initials would be a non issue for me
  3. I missed the g once in a typo and it hadn't occurred to me until then. No one else has ever mentioned it - he's 7 and it's not been an issue so far
  4. Not been called Gus yet but I wouldn't mind - its a great nickname I think

Also like Douglas, Fergus and Magnus, not so keen on Seamus
Logan is nice but getting very common up here now. How about Murray?

Noooo.

Angus, Malcolm, Fraser, Douglas, Cameron, Fergus, Ewan, Craig and Hamish are all on our (not so) shortlist. We are Scottish, live in Scotland and love scottish names, but I agree with your husband that you don't want the name to sound too Scottish (Hamish McDougall sounds like something from a cartoon which may end up with him being teased).

I think we're going to opt for something Scottish but a bit different.

WankerDeAsalWipe · 05/08/2015 13:16

cearstaidh if you are looking for Scottish but a bit different for a boy. on our list we had:

Blaven
Merrick
Lorne
Walker
Cairn
Malcom
Nairn
Alpin
Broderick
Uilleam
Tavish
Ramsay

A bit more mainstream from our list:

Grant
Calum
Scott
Brody

I love Uilleam as my grandad was William but DH isn't keen. His favourite is Mathe which means Bear.

Did you decide on a name? Just having aloo, as considering Hamish! Just as other suggestions maybe Rufus (sounds a bit like Angus and means redhaired) or Aidan.

aoife24 · 04/09/2015 21:12

Hamish is fab.

dementedma · 06/09/2015 19:23

I love Angus and here in Scotland know a couple of them. Also a Hamish, a Ruaridh, several Frasers ( don't like that one much), plus endless Scott's, Stuarts, Calum, Donalds and Gordons.
I like Lachlan, hate Keir. DS has a friend called Struan.
