I'm 36 weeks pregnant with my second daughter and really struggling to choose a nice cute name. It has to be a Muslim name to please my dh but I'd also like one that is almost English too - easy to pronounce and cute. My daughter is called Aalia which I really like so I'd prefer my baby's name to start with a different letter. My sons name is really difficult and nobody can pronounce it which annoys him. Thanks in advance Smile

Firstly op sorry don't want to hijack your thread and turn in into one about religion but I'll just quickly clear something up for redbinneo
Muslims consider the Koran the word of God. Hence, it is the primary and supreme source of jurisprudence in Islam. The practice of Prophet Muhammad, Sunnah, is second in line. Both leave no doubt that apostasy is not a punishable offence at all, let alone by death.

The quran frequently mentions freedom of conscience and makes it clear that God - not man - is the sole judge of faith (or the lack thereof) and will reward or punish as He wills in the Hereafter.
I can give you the exact chapters and verses of the quran if you would like to read for yourself?

My post looks very strange rant here on its own now but it was a response to redbinneo's very bizarre suggestion of a name.

Etak:
All you need to do is persuade your coreligionists of that.
While you are at it, burying women accused of adultery up to their waists and stoning them to death is a bit iffy.
Religious leaders who marry sub teenage old girls might be considered as differing from the norm.
And, this is a really big AND, islam considers women to be inferior to men.

red

We're not discussing the pros and cons of Islam, just which names work in British and Islamic cultures.

Fuck off.

chocolatechip123 · 09/08/2015 00:46

Zara? I know a couple.

Not Fatima - a child I know has the nn 'fatty' or 'farty' (definitely loses something in translation).

I'd love to know where you get all your info about islam from red is it the daily mail or the sun? As I said previously your post about apostasy is based on wrong information and also all of the above points too - I'm not denying that these things go on in the world but this is not Islam, and that's where some people can't differentiate between what is islam and what some specific
individuals/groups/cultures portray.
If you were to research properly you would see what the real teachings are, it's easy and simple and women are certainly not inferior to men!

When there's a female leader of a muslim state I'll give your argument some credence.
Here's a question or two , how many wives can your husband have? How many husbands can you have?
How old was Aisha? Is that a normal relationship?
Do women in Iran who are accused of adultery get buried up to their waists and stoned to death?
Do muslim women have to cover themselves from head to foot while their husbands walk a few paces in front of them in jeans and T shirts.
You have one life, why throw it away because a man centuries ago thought it was good idea to copy the Torah and wage war?

Aya
(currently debating whether to call my own dd Aya, its a beautiful name that means miracle I think.)

addictedtosugar · 09/08/2015 21:21

There have been several female leaders of states where the majority follow Islam. Pakistan springs to mind, but I'm fairly sure that while it was a first, it has not been a last.

Etak15 · 09/08/2015 22:21

Female muslim leaders:
Tansu Çiller, elected prime minister of Turkey, 1993-1996
Benazir Bhutto, elected prime minister of Pakistan 1988-1990, 1993-1996
Mame Madior Boye, appointed prime minister of Senegal, 2001-2002.
Megawati Sukarnoputri, elected president of Indonesia, 2001-2004
Khaleda Zia, elected prime minister of Bangladesh, 1991-1996 and 2001-2006
Sheikh Hasina, elected prime minister of Bangladesh 2009-
Roza Otunbayeva, president of Kyrgyzstan, 2010- 2011
Atifete Jahjaga, elected president of Kosovo 2011-
Q1, my husband can have 7 wife's but islamically the conditions of this are that I would have to be completely happy with this (which I wouldn't be) and if he did have more than one they would all have to be treated completely equally in every way (which would be impossible) so this couldn't happen.
Q2, I can have one husband - I wouldn't want anymore!
Q3 &4 despite many islamaphobic media reports that say Aisha was as young as six, most evidence points to Aisha being 15 at the time of betrothal and 19 at the time of marriage,in seventh-century Arabia, adulthood was defined as the onset of puberty. (and was also the case in Europe: five centuries after Muhammad's marriage to Aisha, 33-year-old King John of England married 12-year-old Isabella of Angoulême.) Interestingly, of the many criticisms of Muhammad made at the time by his opponents, none focused on Aisha's age at marriage.
In a society without a birth registry and where people did not celebrate birthdays, most people estimated their own age and that of others. Aisha would have been no different. What's more, Aisha had already been engaged to someone else before she married Muhammad, suggesting she had already been mature enough by the standards of her society to consider marriage for a while. It seems difficult to reconcile this with her being six.
Q5,
Yes this does happen, please see my above post about different societies interpretation of islam, this isn't right.
Q6. Muslim men and women are supposed to dress modestly, some do some don't - again down to the individual.
women do not have to walk behind there husbands??!! You can walk at they're side, in front behind - with them without them however you like!
The quran is not a copy of the Torah it recognises that the Torah came first and there are numerous references to the Torah in the quran.
And 'waging war' just isn't what it's about.
I'm not throwing my life away far far from it, it's sad to see that islam from an outsiders point of view is how you see it, I wish I could do more to educate people on the myths and propaganda. If you want any further reading of the above points I can point you in the right direction, I know you probably won't but the offers there.
