Adeline

Asked DS (5) what he wanted to call his baby sister and he comes up with Adeline (pronounced A-duh-line). Have NO idea where it's from. Asked him to repeat it in case i'd misheard or he meant to say something else but he just said it again.

I actually really like it but would have gone for something "classic". Would she hate me for it when she's 15??

I absolutely love it. Gorgeously old school.

mummytime · 01/08/2015 22:36

I love it, it was my Great Grandmother's real name (lots mistakenly seemed to think it was Adelaide). I might have used it if...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 01/08/2015 22:39

Love it and don't all DDs hate you when they're 15?

CarrotCakeMuffins · 02/08/2015 06:35

Love it. Reminds me of Adeline Yen Mah, author of Falling Leaves and other books. An inspirational woman who despite her abusive childhood in China, fought hard to make a success of herself.

I have no idea why Adelaide and Adeline have both become so popular. I think they are really ugly sounding, and old fashioned but not in a good way.

itsbetterthanabox · 02/08/2015 06:49

It's a great name

DirtyMugPolice · 02/08/2015 06:52

I like it - your son has good taste! Mine is the same age and he wants to call his baby sister poo poo.

Cake0rdeath · 02/08/2015 19:41

Adeline: the answer to your haemorrhoidsGrin

Mulled it over and it's now on the possible list: we'll need to see what DD looks like when she's born. It's going to be Annie, Adeline or Erin.

Ds still can't explain where he got it from!!!

Maybe he saw an ad for The Age of Adeline film on tv?
I really like the name Adeline.

aoife24 · 03/08/2015 01:02

For some reason it sounds Australian to me, I hear it said with an Australian accent.

wafflyversatile · 03/08/2015 01:53

Adeline was introduced to England by the Normans in the eleventh century, was very common during the Middle Ages, then vanished until the Victorian Gothic revival. Not classic enough? :p

Adeline is the American pronunciation. French pronunciation is Adeleen.

The one I know is pronounced Adeleen.

I think (not 100%) but wasn't there a character called Adeline in a Peter Carey novel? Maybe that's the Aussie connection or that it sounds a bit like Adelaide.
