Baby names

Etienne?

DH and I have barely discussed names yet, but we struggled with DS.

We only had Devon for a boy, no girls names and when he was born, it fitted him.

Now 24 weeks and we don't know the sex. DH thinks boy, I think girl!

I like Warwick for a boy, but I know people will say about it being a place name as is Devon. i also like Hunter, but I have a friend with a boy called Hunter.

I really like the name Etienne, which is apparently traditionally a boys name, said Eh-tee-n.

Still no girls names. Hmmm.

I love it and wanted it for ds, but dp vetoed it unfortunately.

I know one little boy called Etienne and his nickname is Etty which is also pretty cute. His parents aren't French, personally I don't think that matters at all.

It's so much nicer than Stephen!

But Harper is a surname too. Harper Lee's full name is Nelle Harper Lee, the Harper is a family surname.

Morley sounds a little clumsy with our surname, i would say my least favourite from those three.

So many names are a surname.....

Morley Shock Morl (mawl) for short? And you'll find yourself constantly saying, "No, not Molly...Morley"

I'm not sure why people thought you'd name a girl Etienne! You made it pretty clear in your original post that you'd thought of it for a boy and didn't even have any girls names.

I think it might be because a couple of weeks ago there was a poster considering it for their daughter and mn was horrified.

Elspeth is a name that's really grown on me. When someone says Harper I always think of David Beckham's daughter but I know that's not a universal thought and Harper Lee is probably a better association (even though it wasn't her real first name).

Morely I'm not keen on but it seems like it's not your favourite ever.

Do you like Briony, Elsie/Elise or Annalise?

I don't think you liked any of my earlier suggestion so I will stop making them now though!

And congratulations Flowers on having a baby. Smile

I know Harper is a surname.
It's also a designation if you want to pick hairs.
However, it is popular as a forename too, so it is not solely a surname.
Morley is not commonly used as anything other than a surname or a brand of slippers.

It's not very nice, though, is it. it's too much like harpy.

Yes thats my exact worry with Harper, wishiwaswonderwoman, Ds thinks Harper sounds daft and Harbour would be a much better name Grin

If it were his choice we would end up with bumble mud squelch sugarplum

Dont stop suggesting! I like Elise and Eloise is pretty too. I seem to be gravitating toward E names, especially with Elspeth in the mix!

I think we are looking for something not to abbreviate.

Eloise is really nice. Do you like Erica or Ella?

Harbour! Shock Grin don't let your DH fill out the birth certificate!

I have a think for E names so love Elspeth for a girl. Also like:

Estelle
Elodie
Eloise
Evelyne (Evie)
Emme
Eliza
Eden
Elise

Ettiene for a boy is gorgeous too.

If you like names starting with E, what about Esther?

I really like Warwick. Also second CSLewis on the pronounciation of Etienne.

Morley is a suburb of Leeds so fits in with your place name theme...

Elise and Eloise seem to be getting quite popular round here

How about Elizabeth, Eleanor, Ellen, Eleri (Welsh name), Helena, Alice, Alexa, or Olwen (Welsh again) for a girl?

For a boy how about Justin, Ryan, Dylan, Connor, Cameron, Finn or Austin?

Personally I find it odd and a bit try hard for anyone to give their child a name from a particular country, if they have absolutely no link to that country.

However, Etienne is a lovely name.
