Not short for anything, not Katie.

Just Kate.

What do you think?

I am Kate and I have always hated the fact that I have no choices.

My parents were going to name me Katherine, but listened to someone making the argument that there was no point naming me Katherine if I was to be called Kate.

Don't do it to her. Let her have the options that I was denied.

Doublebubblebubble · 31/07/2015 12:16

I'm a Kate (short for Katherine. I hate it, i hate it eurghh) I get called katie (I don't mind it too much but I think it is a kiddy name more than a grown up one - if that makes sense) or Kathy family pronounce it cafff-y eurghhhh. I chose Kate for myself so I love it and I think it would be really sweet for a baby xx good luck xx

Doublebubblebubble · 31/07/2015 12:17

Also I've called myself Kate since I was old enough to do so (about 4)

Doublebubblebubble · 31/07/2015 12:22

Also also lol I don't respond to Katherine - when people call me it (I really really need to change it by deed poll but I don't want to offend my parents) I just stare blankly.

Blahia · 31/07/2015 21:00

Not keen on it personally. Seems a bit dated and 'parents generation' to me.... BUT not everybody like my daughter's name I'm sure, so go for it if you love it, we can't all like the same names luckily! X

Blahia · 31/07/2015 21:02

And if I did use it, I would put Katherine/ Katharine/ Catherine on the birth certificate to give her some options.

LadySharrowOfGolter · 31/07/2015 21:11

I met a 5 year old Kate this week while I was helping out at a kids party. She was a lovely, confident child and I thought the name real suited her.

Really like it myself.

eightoutoften · 31/07/2015 21:57

I have a 21 yr old Katherine who was Katie up until she was about 11. Then decided on Kate at senior school.

She put Katherine on her CV (as she thought it sounded more sophisticated) so thats what she is known as there.

Her boyfriend calls her Kay (but imo he's just too lazy to say all of it but thats another thread)

At home she's Kate.

I would put Katherine on the birth certificate and let her make her own mind up :)

Like it

drudgetrudy · 01/08/2015 10:55

I called my DD Katharine and shortened it to Kate-she was always known as Kate. I wanted the "give her options" route. She wasn't happy about it as an adult and said that it led to confusion and I should have just called her Kate in the first place. Obviously I like the name Kate a lot but also like quite classic names like Elizabeth, Eleanor and Anne (Medieval queen names).
I think Kate is a strong but feminine name.

Emochild · 01/08/2015 11:05

I have a Kate -just Kate, not short for anything

We called her Kitty as a nickname when she was little, grandparents still do

Now she's a teenager she goes by kat and generally won't respond to anything but

MimiSunshine · 01/08/2015 12:35

I like it but prefer Cate as I think it looks more sophisticated and less of a shortening somehow

littlejohnnydory · 01/08/2015 17:20

I am a Kate. I changed it by deed poll from the longer version and as a result gave my four dc names that can't be shortened. It caused confusion - exam certificates in different names, ID refused, cheques that couldn't be cashed. Imo Kate is a name in its own right and not a nickname. I don't mind it, it was too popular when I was growing up but not now - ditto Anna and Eleanor.

The longer version is horrible and so many spelling variations makes it even worse. I hated having a name that I'd never been called by and the idea of having to use it on my wedding day, children's birth certs etc really bothered me - it just wasn't my name. So I changed it and now have a longer paper trail of confusion. Don't do it. If you like Kate, use Kate.

stuckonnames · 01/08/2015 18:26

I think Kate, just Kate is a lovely name! I knew a lot growing up and remember being really surprised at school that some of them had a longer name (Katherine/Kathryn).

Ally1234 · 01/08/2015 19:59

Interestingly, I do not like 'Cate' at all.

I have this same problem with the name Emily. I cannot stand Emily but I love Emilie. Go figure

As for Kate, I quite like it as is simply and classy and I think it is quite feminine. It could be shortened to Kat if she choses to do so but I don't think you should ever pick a name based on nicknames. If I child wants one they will find one (my dd has a beautiful feminine name yet insists on calling herself Bob as that's what her initials spell out!)

PlainHunting · 01/08/2015 20:04

Lovely. Much underused.

WellyMummy · 01/08/2015 20:19

Another Kate here. My mum chose it as she didn't like people shortening names, then she called me Katie unless I was in trouble. I didn't like my name as a child, but I do now, though I prefer the people who love me to call me Katie!
