Expecting DC2, have no idea for boys names, but for a girl, I would really like Madeleine, however I'm iffy about the McCann association, wouldn't like it to be the first thing people think of when they hear the name. So I'm looking for alternatives, any suggestions for me ?

I love Madeleine. It's such a beautiful elegant name.
If you love it, just use it. It will become 'her' name, no one else's.
My DD is Marianne which I think is similar in feel.

Don't worry about the McCann connection. That would never occur to me. It is such a beautiful name.

DD is Madeleine. She's about 18 months older and looked very similar to the images of Madeleine McCann at the time she disappeared. We've never had a situation where there has been an association - if someone has thought it, they certainly didn't mention it.

It is a lovely name - ginzillas you made me smile, I agree it's an elegant name and I am sure DD will grow into it. She's more likely to be found up to her armpits in mud or climbing trees at the moment!

We also had on our short-list: Imogen, Elizabeth and Rowan.

Ishtar your Madeleine sounds fab. My Marianne is often to be found rolling around in mud (she is three) but I think her name will serve her well in the future!

I don't think there's too much of an association, either - it's not an unusual enough name, so unless your surname has a Mac at the start or something, I'd just call the baby Madeleine. It is very pretty.

I have a Madeleine (middle name violet which is becoming annoyingly popular) and I am really pleased we ignored the McCann association, her name is often remarked on in a sea of Grace/Isabella/Imogen's as beautiful but uncommon.
I also liked Cecile, Margot, Agatha, Rosie (Rosalind). Go for it. You won't regret it.

Ermengarde

I'll never understand the angst and unwillingness to use Madeleine because of what happened.

She is just a little girl that is missing. She didn't murder anyone or any other such atrocious thing.
Feels almost insulting to her.

If you truly love the name then use it.
