I always assume Tig in Woolly and Tig is really an Antigone. I can't think what else it would be short for.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/07/2015 13:38

Antigone is the name of one of the daughters of Oedipus and Jocasta. She stands up for what she believes to be right even though it means facing certain death. Sophocles' play Antigone is one of the masterpieces of Greek tragedy.

Lecture over!

blueistheonlycolourwefeel · 28/07/2015 13:38

I've noticed the difference in children's names at different soft play venues.
One I go to is in a smart town white high house prices - Florence, Albert, Xavier.....
One I don't go to anymore because my child always had D&V after visiting Demi-Lee, Curtis, Wayne......GrinGrinGrinGrin

chrome100 · 28/07/2015 14:19

Antigone?! Really.

Oh dear...

reuset · 28/07/2015 14:47

Some people are put off Antigone (think of Penelope for pronunciation, I provided an explanation for this sort of name a while ago, simple once you recognise if it's greek, roman etc) by the manner of her death.
Though I'm more inclined to think of the positive, as mentioned above, that she was strong and resolute

reuset · 28/07/2015 14:49

I don't know if it makes a good name. Though you could have nick name Anne, and some people even favour Tiggy Confused

Now that I think of it I've only known Americans (two in my lifetime) named Antigone, with no Greek connections (not saying needed, just mentioning).

Wayne - that was popular as a "definitely not posh name" donkey's years ago, same as Darren. Mind my DH's orthopaedic surgeon is called Darren, as is his Registrar!!

It's all tosh I reckon - Kayleigh, Kayleigh-Mae, Lili-Jai, Emi-Lee, Kyla, Skyla, Kyle, Kai, Tyler, Tyrone, not posh but then what's posh anyway - think that ghastly Katie Hopkins was banging on about children's names and not allowing her kids to play with anyone called Tyler, and favoured Illyana!

Thing is all the old names are coming back - Arthur, George, Stanley, Hilda, Edith and Mildred............yuk...........names come and go - in the 70s/80s there was a run on biblical names, Matthew, Benjamin, Joseph, Ruth and so called middle class names Hannah, Laura, William, Thomas and now it's Lily, Olivia, Isla, Grace, Isabella, Oliver, Jack (might be on the wane at last)

When my cousin called her daughter Laura over 50 years ago we were all so sorry for the kid, then years later Laura's were 10 a penny. I called my firstborn Daniel (born in the 60s) and it was very unusual but now quite popular. Some names never die out - William, George, James etc

Well in my DSs inner city private school there are a few:

Omars, Ibrahims, Akashs, Sanans and Abduls.

As well as a few:

Harrys, Edwards, James' and the odd Tristan and Hugo.

and even a Kayden!!!

I think mumsnet impression of who goes to private school is rather limited and unrealistic.

Weve got a lot of unusual names but then we've got a lot of non uk families.

Nature of the beast.

No nevaehs though Smile

Chchchchanging · 28/07/2015 23:11

Nana Nina -because it was something me and another pregnant friend were discussing last week- and then I was talking to mum about
M reckoned certain names couldn't be used unless you were posh enough when we were little but now it's not the case
I was Shock that she would be influenced in that way, although I think it was more o wouldn't call them that around here or a lifetime of school hell will ensue ...
As I'm pregnant am musing over if there are trends I guess
Certainly not what's 'allowed'

Some people have unbounded confidence/no self-awareness [delete as appropriate] and never feel a qualm about giving their child an unusual name, whether that's because it's not much used in their area/generation/social sphere/country/culture or an unusual/made-up spelling. Of course, in the fullness of time some of those children come to dislike their names a lot, while others love them - not really possible to predict which way things will go.

Others (like me) would fret about it. We thought briefly about calling our son Miles. Not a particularly out there name, although maybe more so 20+ years ago, but in the end we went for something more mainstream, which we were more comfortable with.

I would say the above applies right across the social spectrum.

Posh family A - Ophelia and Xavier
Posh family B - Elizabeth and James

Not so posh family C - Lily-Mae and TJ
Not so posh family D - Elizabeth and James

Neednewflowers · 29/07/2015 08:40

I love Antigone.

MyPelvicFloorTrainsItself · 29/07/2015 08:50

Why would anyone list the names of the children in their class?

Great way to out yourself.

I hate this name snobbery shit.

chaya5738 · 29/07/2015 20:22

ch1134 · 29/07/2015 23:34
