Opinions? Will be A little brother for DS who has very traditional regal name: George/Edward/Henry/William etc.

Sir, its's an utter first world nightmare, our first name choice taken by some Anglo Saxon king. Ruined it for the rest of us. Bloody Anglo Saxons Wink

reuset · 25/07/2015 21:12

Aethelstan was Danish, his name is certainly Anglo Saxon though. Grin

Wheredidiputthekeys · 25/07/2015 21:22

Reuset, no hand slap, I've read a book on Anglo Saxon kings ( another memo to self, get out more). The maurading Vikings, Goths ,Saxons, and others, its was a mash up all over the continent, as evidenced by DNA tests.

Back to the point of thread, Cedric, umm, no, he was the bullied kid in the Beano (eclectic reading habits)

BothEndsBurning · 25/07/2015 21:48

The name Cedric was made up by Sir Walter Scott.

The Anglo-Saxon king was Cerdic
Does that help? Grin

SirChenjin · 25/07/2015 22:05

In which case the vast majority of UK names will not be 'common' over there, so you won't have to worry about being filled with dread at them having the same names as others in their furrin class, surely?

Where - it is a first world nightmare Grin.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 25/07/2015 23:05

I like it. I re-read Little Lord Fauntleroy at least once a year!

Rivercam · 25/07/2015 23:09

Love it. If you love it also, then name your son Cedric. Fits with his sibling'so name also.

Wheredidiputthekeys · 26/07/2015 00:13

Sir, as I said before, bullied in the Beano, nuff said.

MamaMotherMummy · 26/07/2015 00:23

I like Cedric.

Wheredidiputthekeys · 26/07/2015 00:49

Both, Cedric is a made up name Shock, it can't be, it is in the Beano.

What are you saying? Sir Walter Scott was way past the Anglo Saxons, someone more erudite, please help me?

Mrsfrumble · 26/07/2015 00:50

I've never read Little Lord Fauntleroy. Instead it makes me think of Lt. Cedric Daniels from The Wire; so a tall, muscular black dude with awesome cheekbones and a shady past.

I actually quite like. But as a PP said, if you're moving abroad anyway you may not have to try so hard to give your child an uncommon name. We moved to the southern USA with our small Ben. All the kids in his class are called things like Brooks, Carter, Sullivan and Jackson so his very pedestrian name actually stands out.

Wheredidiputthekeys · 26/07/2015 00:54

Sorry, should qualify, more erudite than me, not Both, who clearly knows what they are talking about. Love the Anglo Saxons, so busy at being Anglo saxons, got to admire them and their ingenuity.

SirChenjin · 26/07/2015 09:48

'Tis true Where. Poor Cedric.

MamaLazarou · 26/07/2015 11:07

It's like the name of a cartoon snail, or something.

squoosh · 26/07/2015 12:59

So Cedric is a made up re-working of an existing name? The same as one of those Game of Thrones names then.

Enchufla · 26/07/2015 13:07

I really like cedric it would be on my list for a boy. Or you could be boring and call him something like Wilfred

SirChenjin · 26/07/2015 14:06

A made up name of a drippy character from the Beano which no-one uses any more??! Priceless Grin

reuset · 26/07/2015 15:08

I think Game of Thrones spellings are sort of authentic, that kind of time period spelling wouldn't be standardized and you'd have many variations in spelling of the same name.

Some think Cedric the Saxon's name was just a misspelling, or mistake, rather than an attempt at making up a new name.

JakeyBurd · 26/07/2015 18:32

Who was Cedric in the Beano? I was an avid reader in my childhood but can't recall a Cedric.Confused

RiverTam · 26/07/2015 18:42

Me neither, I think Sir might be getting mixed up with Walter the Softy?

MamaLazarou · 26/07/2015 18:51

There was definitely a Cedric in one of the comics, not sure it was Beano. Maybe Beezer or Whizzer & Chips? It's a daft name regardless.

squoosh · 26/07/2015 18:54

Apparently it wasn't The Beano but The Beano's stablemate The Topper that featured Cedric.

Cedric
squoosh · 26/07/2015 18:54

Cedric is the one on the left I believe.

Lovely spread by the looks of things.

Methe · 26/07/2015 18:59

I quite like it tbh :) Ced-ric though, not Seed-ric which is awful.

I have wondered every one of the 35 times I've watched Nught at the Museum is Americans really do say See-cil instead of Ce-cil.

Methe · 26/07/2015 19:01

And I think Ric is a v cool nickname.
