Opinions on the name Dorothy nn Dottie

To go with siblings Charlie and Tilly.

Love the meaning of Dorothy, 'gift of god' and she would be a gift as we have lost two babies.

Are you aware that 'friend of Dorothy' is slang for a gay man? I didn't either until a family member chose the name Dorothy and my husband enlightened me. It has caused a few smiles and smirks as she has grown up!

ememem84 · 24/07/2015 13:36

Yep. Do it. Lovely name.

Bonsoir · 24/07/2015 13:39

No I really don't like Dorothy. Like Phoebe, it's one of those old lady best left to rest in peace.

DorothyGherkins · 24/07/2015 13:41

Its a lovely classic name. I love the first part of my MN user name more than I love my real life name.

HeyMicky · 24/07/2015 13:49

Love it. My grandmother was Dorothy and went by Dodi . DD1 has it as her middle name. I know a fab adult Dorothy who goes by Dot. Do it!

chrome100 · 24/07/2015 14:59

Hideous. Sorry.

Treesandbees · 24/07/2015 15:30

I know a 2yo called Dotty. Think it's fine for a youngster but can't picture an adult with the name.

Branleuse · 24/07/2015 15:32

I love it

swallowed · 24/07/2015 15:34

I really like it, although I prefer Dorothea, which I couldn't use for various reasons.

Doro is also a possible nickname.

BeautifulLiar · 24/07/2015 16:02

Love it, and may use it but I think I prefer Nancy.

also can you imagine a teenager called Dorothy?!

SuperFlyHigh · 24/07/2015 16:05

Dorothy is the name of my friend's cat. Grin

I prefer Dorothea and it doesn't matter if she's called Thea if your DS is Theo as she may well be called and you can call her Dottie.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/07/2015 16:10

I like both Dorothy and Dorothea. I don't find them plain in the slightest. I can't see the slightest problem in the friend of Dorothy association, which comes from Judy Garland being supposedly a favourite singer of gay men, surely?

SuperFlyHigh, I took it that Theo is not the OP's son, but the half-sibling of one of her children.

SuburbanRhonda · 24/07/2015 16:12

In similar vein, we chose Rosemary for our DD and she loves the name (and is a teenager) Smile

DorothyBastard · 24/07/2015 16:12

It's a great name Grin

Shockers · 24/07/2015 16:15

I love Dorothy. It was my Grandmother's name and she was a wonderful lady.

Benchmark · 24/07/2015 16:25

Lovely name with great nicknames.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/07/2015 16:26

Rosemary is another lovely name. Mysterious to me that it isn't more used!

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 24/07/2015 16:29

Dorothy is great. way better than Dorothea. Smile

SuperFlyHigh · 24/07/2015 16:31

Gasp ah yes half-sibling - still can't see a huge problem with similar names though...

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 24/07/2015 16:33

I really don't think anyone under middle age will care about 'friend of Dorothy ' any more. I mean, aren't young people a bit beyond needing euohamisms for gay? Anyway, the gay man is the 'friend 'not the Dorothy. Judy Garland reference.

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 24/07/2015 16:33

*euohamisms

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 24/07/2015 16:36

jeez. *euphamisms. What is autocorrect on?

Xmasbaby11 · 24/07/2015 17:04

No. I really don't like little old lady names, but I know they're trendy now.

congrats though!

PallasCat · 24/07/2015 18:50

It's lovely. Of course you can!

MamaLazarou · 24/07/2015 19:12

Dorothy is a brilliant name.
