I like it a lot. I prefer it to Florence, which I think is quite frilly and fussy. It's simple and less likely to get shortened to Flo than Florence is.

I think it is its similarity to Laura and Laurel that makes me like it.

Knew of a girl once who had the nickname flora because she would 'spread easily' so its a nay from me

Beautiful name. This would be my choice if I ever had a girl. It's just so lovely. Go for it.

I really loved this name when I was pregnant with DD and desperately wanted it at one point. I could cope with the butter and "spreads like" association. What ruined it for me was reading an article about taking a swab of vaginal flora. That was it.

If you know your child will have the confidence to pull it off then go for it. But there's a girl in my Dd's school called Flora and she's always being called flora butter or the like.

I just can't get over the margarine connection.

How about officially Florence but shortened? Then she can choose the longer version if she wants to later on.

I have one. She's lovely and it suits her. It's always been my favourite girls' name and I'm so glad I put the margarine out of my mind and used it (the only person who has mentioned margarine is my mum!)...I didn't know about the "spreads easily" thing until after she was born but either nobody else knows either or they're too polite to say so. Either way, I don't think her generation will have seen that advert so who cares? It's a lovely name and my dd thinks it makes her a flower fairy! We did call her Flo as a baby but she has been very clear now that "I don't yike dat Flo name. Am Flora."
