Just that really! DH and I expecting a little girl in November and struging with girls names. DH really likes elliott for a girl, she'd be Ellie for short. Or the other name weird is Edith and she's be Edie for short. Thoughts please Smile

Elliott is a boys' name. Too many boys' names are being turned into girls' names for some reason. No one ever suggests they call their son Lily. Oh I wonder why!

Edie is nice (but not Edith. 'Nay' to Edith).

Eminybob · 19/07/2015 06:51

I love Elliot, it was on my list for DS but DP vetoed it.

I also love it for a girl, I think it is quite a feminine sounding name, and I love the Scrubs connection, but I probably wouldn't name a girl Elliot, because despite what I just said, it is a boys name and I'm too much of a traditionalist.

SoupDragon · 19/07/2015 06:59

pearl-clutching idiots can piss off imo.

Off you go then.

Reiltin · 19/07/2015 07:03

I have friends with little girls who have both those names. Love em both Smile

Bumpingalong84 · 19/07/2015 07:11

Wow such a mixed bad of opinions! Which is good, I thought a lot of people would flat out hate it! DH has suggested spelling it ellitte or eliot. We are are thinking of going for a feminine middle name if we chose elliotte like Josephine or Louise. She'd get nicknamed Ellie Lou, Ellie Jo! It's such a hard job picking out a girls name! If it was a boy he would be Noah flat out ha! But there are lots of pretty girls names out there just a struggle to choose one for your own baby! Luckily we have a little time!

Absolutely not.

You love the name perhaps because you like the character in Scrubbs, but it will be your child dealing with the teasing, the bullying and the non stop questions about why she got a man's name.

A very confident outgoing child femenine child could pull it, but what if she is born with a shy personality and not so femenine looks?

If you decide to go ahead with it, use it as a second name, so at least she has the option to use the other, if she finds it too much.

Momzilla82 · 19/07/2015 07:16

It's a boys name sorry. Think of all the problems with call centres in later life. It would grate.

On the other hand Elia is a unisex name. Pronounced Eee- Lie- Aaah

Bumpingalong84 · 19/07/2015 07:16

I meant to say bag* not bad opinions! I think tho that there are far worse names out there for girls than Eliotte! I think it's very feminine sounding. But I appreciate everyone's thoughts that's why I've posted this Smile

Call centres really! I don't think I'm too worried about that haha! Sometimes being different is ok, it's not like I'd be naming her apple or Mercedes which I think are far worse! Obviously a lot of people on here think it's cute. Still in love with Edith too. Ohh this is gonna be hard!! We'll probably get to baby arriving and completely change our minds! But DH is pretty keen!

Edie is lovely. Elliot is awful for a girl.

Elinor is nice as a longer name for Ellie. Means the girl can also use the nick name nell

CPtart · 19/07/2015 07:31

No it's a boys name and not a nice one at that.
I would avoid Ellie too, there are billions of them.

dilbert19912 · 19/07/2015 07:37

I love elliot for a girl Smile

austenozzy · 19/07/2015 07:43

She will have to explain it all the time to people insisting it's a boy's name (which it is). The misspelling idea is even worse as she will then have to also explain how to spell it, with people asking 'are you sure?' and other daft questions. All of this will happen daily and it will annoy the hell out of her. She won't thank you. It's a name choice for her, not for you. Give her a break!

LemonYellowSun · 19/07/2015 07:58

Why give a girl a boys name when the only girl who has it is on TV !?!

Aciderwouldbenice · 19/07/2015 08:13

Oi! Stop pinching all the pretty, lovely boys names for girls- they have enough pretty, lovely names! (Yes i do have a boy called Elliott!)

Flingingmelon · 19/07/2015 08:58

Love it and if she wants to avoid being an Ellie she could try Lottie instead?

girliefriend · 19/07/2015 09:16

I think Elliot is a lovely name and can see why it would 'fit' for a boy or a girl as it sounds so pretty!!

Edith for me is still a bit old fashioned but I like Edie.

I also think Eleanor and Charlotte are lovely girls names which would minimise any confusion, I think with a little girl called Elliot you may get some very confused people trying to work out why your little boy is dressed in pink Grin

Frumpplump · 19/07/2015 09:29

I like it, but I also like Dylan for a girl Grin

HaHaPants · 19/07/2015 09:40

I don't like it for a girl.

florascotia · 19/07/2015 09:50

Elliot (however spelled) is a surname. It is sometimes used as a first name for boys.

As an earlier poster said, the TV writers gave their female character a name they considered essentially male to make a point about her parents' disappointment at her not being a boy (and presumably the effect that had on her character/development). It was a deliberately odd choice, not their idea of a nice name for a girl.

RepeatAdNauseum · 19/07/2015 09:53

James and Dylan and other "male" names are really popular for girls at the moment.

I think Elliot is cute for either gender. I might prefer it for a girl, slightly. I can't see anyone getting bullied for it.

AuntieStella · 19/07/2015 10:07

People will be watching ET for far longer than Scrubs, if screen Elliotts are an important guide.

It's been a boys name for generations (used by a Bronte to pose as male) and one US TV series isn't going to shift the general use for boys.

I'm not wild about surnames as names anyhow, but this is a good choice for a boy. And there are quite a few (babies to early primary age) round here. All boys, and several with a sibling Finn.

Snog · 19/07/2015 10:10

I think your dd will find Eliot a super annoying name as she will forever be correcting people about it and explaining it, and even spelling it!

AngryBeaver · 19/07/2015 10:10

I think most names are u used now? Really like Elliot for a girl. I have a little boy, Rhoan (rowan) but love that for a girl, too.
Do it!

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/07/2015 10:26

What Flora said.

Also, op, Mercedes is a Spanish name, there's nothing wrong with it.
