I have two DC at primary and there is only one.

ToFleaOrNotToFlea · 15/07/2015 18:57

Love it, it is DS middle name

ProbablyMe · 15/07/2015 19:03

I have one and have only met one other in nearly 15 years.

mrsjskelton · 15/07/2015 19:12

Quite uncommon, most would christen Alex now x

MarieJeanne · 15/07/2015 19:19

Yes, sorry, but that's my opinion.

MsJuniper · 15/07/2015 19:54

It's a beautiful name but I do know a lot of them (at least 5 and I don't know that many children!)

AmandaTanen · 15/07/2015 19:56

I love it, I only know 2 who have it as a first name, one aged 32 and one aged 3. Very popular as a middle name.

RugBugs · 15/07/2015 20:02

It doesn't appear to be very common where we are in the NW. I'm 37wks and it's our favourite at the minute.
We must have a thing about using popular middle names Grin our last child is a Louise!

applecatchers36 · 15/07/2015 20:12

I would say classic rather than common & boring, always think of it as a Royal name...

MrsKillianJones · 15/07/2015 20:23

I'm in Scotland where it's popular, but despite that I rarely meet any so wouldn't say it's common. I have one so do notice. He's the only one is his whole school.

It's so not boring, it's a fantastic name with loads of nickname choices.

sweetpeame · 15/07/2015 20:24

I know Alex's in their 30's and under 5. It's popular certainly but still a nice, classic name. It's safe but not boring. To be honest I'd go for safe any day over outlandish/faddy/"unique".

Sophronia · 15/07/2015 21:22

I love it, I think it's a classic rather than being boring.

bunny85 · 15/07/2015 21:43

Thanks everyone, seems like it's definitely to be considered!

RugBugs, not long to go now, you must be so excited! Good luck! I'm only 21 weeks at the moment, but time seems to just fly by Smile

Sweetpea, so would I! We really seem to like traditional and safe names. The only downside they can sometimes become too common and start losing their 'character' (I might be wrong, but sometimes feel like that). Anyway I think picking out a name for a baby boy is a lot harder!!

Love it

EmmaWoodlouse · 16/07/2015 08:15

I think it's lovely and not particularly common. It also has the advantage of having so many different short forms that if you did come up against a class with 3 of them in it, it would not be difficult to make yours distinctive.

BothEndsBurning · 16/07/2015 09:53

Agree with Emma. Alexander has too many variations to be either common or boring.

kep1979 · 16/07/2015 10:16

I have an Alexander, and I don't think there is another in his primary school. So definitely not too common. I am obviously biased but I think it is a gorgeous classic name.

Thurlow · 16/07/2015 10:34

There seems to be a few boy Alex's around under 4 at the moment. Which is only a problem as DD is the only girl Alex we've come across!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/07/2015 10:36

It's a great name

The reason it's so popular is because of this. It's not boring, and there are different short names you can have for it. I like it. :)

NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe · 16/07/2015 10:40

I hope it's not common or boring as DS is Alexander, nn Xander!

dontthinktwiceitsalright · 16/07/2015 11:11

I think it's quite popular but for good reason , it's a lovely name . Not boring at all

We have one. I think it is slightly more common as a middle name than a first name.

It is an excellent name because:

  1. there is one standard spelling.
  2. it doesn't get misheard as anything else.
  3. there is a choice of short forms.
  4. it travels well - it's understood all over Europe and beyond
  5. it goes with "the Great"

Grin @ "it goes with "the Great""
